Overview
Expleo is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer to support the growth of Expleo's Naval Mission System capability. Working within a multidisciplinary engineering team, the successful candidate will be responsible for the development, maintenance, and governance of key systems engineering artefacts throughout the project lifecycle.
The role will focus on engineering planning, technical governance, configuration management, design reviews, and acceptance evidence management. The engineer will act as a focal point between technical disciplines, ensuring engineering activities are appropriately planned, controlled, and evidenced in support of programme milestones and customer acceptance.
Experience within naval, maritime, or combat systems environments is desirable, particularly where candidates have supported complex platform or mission-system development programmes.
The initial project is remote working with occasional onsite meetings and workshops at any Expleo office (Preston, Derby, and/or Bristol).
Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain key engineering planning artefacts including:
- Integrated Test, Evaluation and Acceptance Plans (ITEAP)
- Integrated Test and Evaluation Plans (ITEP)
- Systems Engineering Management Plans (SEMP)
- Engineering Management Plans (EMP)
- Coordinate and administer engineering governance reviews, including:
- Preliminary Design Reviews (PDR)
- Critical Design Reviews (CDR)
- Production Readiness Reviews (PRR)
- Test Readiness Reviews (TRR)
- Harbour Acceptance Tests (HAT)
- Sea Acceptance Tests (SAT)
- Support programme engineering leads in maintaining technical baselines and configuration control activities.
- Manage engineering data packages, ensuring documentation is correctly controlled, reviewed, issued, and recorded.
- Coordinate responses to review comments, technical queries, and customer observations.
- Collate, structure, and manage acceptance evidence to demonstrate contractual compliance and support customer acceptance activities.
- Support verification, validation, and certification activities by maintaining requirements traceability and evidence repositories.
- Review acceptance evidence against Verification Cross Reference Index (VCRI) requirements and identify gaps, risks, and evidence shortfalls.
- Assist with production and maintenance of engineering metrics, action logs, risk registers, and technical governance reports.
- Facilitate communication across engineering disciplines, suppliers, and customer stakeholders.
- Support audits, baseline reviews, and programme assurance activities.

Qualifications
- Degree qualified in Systems Engineering, Engineering, Science, Mathematics, or a related discipline.
- Alternative qualifications and demonstrable defence engineering experience will be considered.
- INCOSE ASEP/CSEP or equivalent desirable.
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) status desirable but not essential.
Essential Skills
- Systems engineering experience within defence, maritime, aerospace, or other highly regulated industries.
- Experience producing and maintaining engineering management and systems engineering plans.
- Strong understanding of engineering lifecycle processes and technical governance.
- Experience coordinating major design reviews and engineering milestone activities.
- Knowledge of configuration management principles and baseline control.
- Experience managing technical documentation and controlled engineering data.
- Requirements management and traceability experience.
- Ability to assess and collate verification and acceptance evidence.
- Strong stakeholder engagement and coordination skills.
- Ability to work across multidisciplinary engineering teams.
- Excellent written communication and reporting skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and engineering data management tools.

Desired Skills
- Naval, maritime, or combat systems experience.
- Experience supporting complex System-of-Systems programmes.
- Familiarity with Defence Standards, JSPs, and MOD engineering governance.
- Experience with VCRI management and acceptance evidence frameworks.
- Experience supporting HAT, SAT, integration, and acceptance activities.
- Knowledge of engineering databases and repository tools.
- Familiarity with DOORS, Polarion, JIRA, Windchill, Teamcenter, or equivalent toolsets.
- Experience working with customer technical authorities and acceptance organisations.
- Security cleared (SC) or eligible to obtain clearance.
Experience
- Experience supporting engineering delivery within complex defence programmes.
- Proven experience coordinating technical reviews and programme governance activities.
- Experience managing engineering plans, schedules, and evidence repositories.
- Demonstrable understanding of design maturity progression from concept through acceptance.
- Experience working within controlled configuration and data management environments.
- Experience supporting customer acceptance and programme assurance activities.
What Do I Need Before I Apply
- Must be eligible to obtain and maintain UK Security Clearance (SC).
- Sole UK National preferred due to potential programme restrictions.
