Location: Portsmouth Naval Base

Salary: Up to £49,100 depending on skills and experience

Job Description:
This position sits within the Systems Engineering Hub, which is part of the Warship Technical Authority (WTA) Service Hub. The WTA aims to deliver Naval whole ship, systems and equipment engineering support and change management. You will be part of a high performing Systems Engineering team, which works across the Maritime and Land Defence Solutions business unit. You will be required to lead and manage the delivery of on-going contracted workstreams and deliver tailored systems engineering services to the Asset Management Service Hubs, which comprises of warship Platform Management, Maintenance Management, Supply Chain, Data and Digital Services.
This role would provide an opportunity to gain significant competence in requirement definition and management through the system decomposition using iterative recursion of the functional requirements for the control and indication of submarine platform management system.
Additionally, the position is designed to provide autonomy in the systems engineering team, and concurrently deliver a breadth of experience across the Asset Management organisation, through the application of systems engineering tools and principles in a warship support domain.
Core duties:
- Apply Systems Thinking to complex system challenges, delivering stakeholder requirements elicitation, analysis and management to ensure systems engineering artefacts are developed to satisfy stakeholder needs.
- Understand and apply strategies around system development across a typical lifecycle, from requirement elicitation through to qualification, including integration, verification and validation activities.
- Identify system emergent properties, trade-offs, optimisation, risk management and verification activities.
- Liaise with multiple internal and external stakeholders to ensure effective and efficient engagement in support of system realisation.
- Work with multiple Asset Management Service Hubs to tailor and deliver the Systems Engineering capabilities and services as required.
- Utilise Model Based Systems Engineering Tools (e.g. Enterprise Architect) to capture system definition.
- Mentor and support Junior Engineers including Secondary Line Management responsibility.

Essential Skills:
- Understand engineering principles and approaches underpinning design and development activities and be capable of systems thinking, applying holistic approaches to complex problems, including knowledge of appropriate Systems Engineering standards (e.g. ISO 15288).
- Have experience of requirements management, configuration management, working with large scale complex system designs, including systems lifecycles (V model) and other lifecycle models (e.g. Waterfall, Agile) and associated tools (e.g. JIRA).
- Be experienced in using a high level design methodology (e.g. UAF, NAF, TOGAF, SysML, UML) and contemporary concepts and technologies (e.g. MBE, MBSE, digital twins, autonomous systems, AR/VR, AI/ML, IoT, etc).
- Be qualified to degree level, or equivalent, in Systems Engineering or a related discipline; Be a member of a relevant professional body, and be working towards a Chartered Engineer (CEng) level, with an ambition of obtaining professional registration in the future.

Asset Management gives you the opportunity to work across a number of exciting programmes and services, such as Type 45, Minehunters, Queen Elizabeth Class Carriers, Type 23s & Offshore Patrol Vessels, International Naval Programmes and the Material State Management Service. Being in the Asset Management business, the role opens up further opportunities of working on exciting future developments that align with our customer’s direction and strategy.
