Senior Systems Engineer (Rail)

We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Senior Systems Engineer (Rail) to join our Systems Engineering, Information Management and Rail Engineering Management practice, within our Consulting Engineering division. We're looking for someone based in or around London, but with office locations in Manchester, Birmingham, Derby, York, Bristol, Swindon, and Cardiff, we welcome applications from candidates across these regions and elsewhere in the UK.

You’ll become part of our vibrant, inclusive community that celebrates our differences and makes a real impact across the UK.

What will the role offer?

  • The standard working week is 37.5 hours, and we offer a range of flexible working practices, including hybrid, part-time, and adaptable working patterns, allowing you to adjust how you work as your life evolves.

Key Projects

  • As an appointed Design Partner on some of the UK’s most significant and complex rail and highways infrastructure projects, we are proud to support major programmes such as Northern Powerhouse Rail, Eastern Routes Partnership, Northwest & Central Framework, Core Valley Lines, Trans-Pennine Route Upgrade, and Cardiff Crossrail.
  • In this specific role, you will join our team delivering systems engineering services across Transport for London’s Infrastructure Improvement Framework (IIF) portfolio, supporting the development and assurance of a range of infrastructure programmes that improve reliability, capacity, and passenger experience across the network.

Our in-house engineering teams deliver design and systems solutions across all Network Rail project stages and multiple disciplines, driving improved connectivity, enhancing passenger journeys, and shaping the future of infrastructure safety and efficiency.

  • These programmes also provide a diverse range of opportunities for personal and professional development, whether you are working on long-term, high-value frameworks or smaller, community-focused initiatives. With these frameworks in place, you will have the opportunity to influence infrastructure projects that shape the region’s future.

What you will be doing:

  • Our Senior Systems Engineers play a pivotal role within Amey’s Systems Engineering capability, working closely with clients such as Network Rail and other major infrastructure organisations.
  • You will lead and support the delivery of whole-system engineering solutions, ensuring effective integration across infrastructure, rolling stock, operations, and maintenance.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
