The role is suited to an engineer with strong practical experience of microwave backhaul, multi-vendor transmission networks and service-impacting customer faults, combined with a solid understanding of IP routing, Ethernet switching, QoS/HQoS, synchronization and network management.
Core Technical Focus:
Microwave transmission
- Microwave, E-band and multiband link support
- RF fault isolation
- Service-impact analysis
- Capacity and availability troubleshooting
Packet networking
- IP routing fundamentals
- Ethernet switching
- VLAN/QinQ
- MSTP/ERP
- QoS and HQoS for carrier-grade transport networks
Network management
- NMS/EMS support
- SNMP alarm investigation
- Software upgrades
- Backups
- RADIUS integration
- Customer-facing diagnostics
Synchronization and legacy transport
- SyncE
- IEEE 1588 PTP
- NTP
- PDH
- SDH
- TDM service support during migration to packet-based backhaul
Responsibilities:
- Handle telephone, email and web-based technical enquiries from internal and external customers on Aviat Networks microwave, packet microwave, network management and associated software products.
- Provide structured fault isolation for microwave transmission services, including RF path performance, equipment alarms, capacity, modulation, interference indicators, link availability and customer service impact.
- Troubleshoot Ethernet and IP service issues across microwave and fibre-connected transport networks, including VLAN/QinQ, L2 protection, routing reachability, traffic rerouting, QoS/HQoS, packet loss, latency and synchronization impact.
- Support IP routing and carrier Ethernet designs used for mobile backhaul and enterprise transport, including static and dynamic routing concepts, IP addressing, gateway reachability, management-plane connectivity and service separation.
- Support network management platforms and operational tools, including alarm investigation, SNMP/EMS/NMS diagnostics, backup and restore, user access, RADIUS integration, software upgrades and reporting.
- Log all activity, customer updates, troubleshooting evidence and resolution actions in the Aviat Networks case system to maintain clear case history and service accountability.
- Escalate complex issues to TAC Management, product engineering or a higher technical level with clear technical summaries, logs, topology information, service impact and recommended next actions.
- Create, review and execute MOPs, test plans, upgrade procedures, configuration checks and technical notes for customer deployments, swaps, maintenance windows and service migrations.
- Pre-check hardware, software, configuration files and scripts before installation, upgrade or customer execution, ensuring that changes are technically valid and operationally safe.
- Validate new scenarios and customer requirements in the lab or live network, including multiband operation, N+0/N+1 resilience, synchronization plans, QoS/HQoS profiles and service migration from TDM/SDH to Ethernet/IP.
- Support customer demonstrations, trials, acceptance testing, fault review meetings and post-resolution follow-up to ensure customer satisfaction and service continuity.
- Participate in the TAC on-call rota and support business-critical escalations when required.
- Train on new technologies, products and acquired platforms, including microwave and packet networking.
- Contribute to knowledge base articles, troubleshooting guides and support process improvements based on recurring customer cases and field issues.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
