About the Role

At Northumbrian Water Group, we're looking for a Senior Technical Advisor - Water Resources & Hydrology to play a pivotal role in securing resilient water supplies for millions of customers across both our Northumbrian Water and Essex & Suffolk Water operating areas, while protecting and enhancing the environment.
This is a fantastic opportunity to join a highly skilled team at the heart of water resources planning and operational decision-making. You'll combine technical expertise, analytical thinking and stakeholder collaboration to help ensure our water resources remain sustainable, reliable and resilient in a changing climate.
Working at the heart of our water resources team, you'll develop, maintain and enhance sophisticated water resource system models and analytical tools. You'll provide the technical evidence that underpins critical regulatory submissions, including Water Resources Management Plans, Regional Water Resources Plans, Drought Plans and Water Industry National Environment Plan (WINEP) investigations.
You'll be responsible for assessing key resource indicators such as reservoir stocks, river flows and abstraction rates, turning data into meaningful insights that support operational performance and strategic investment decisions. Your expertise will also contribute to investigations and hydrological studies that inform major water resource schemes and environmental programmes.

Collaboration will be central to your success. You'll work closely with operational teams to optimise water resource availability and improve raw water network performance, while providing expert technical advice to regulators, internal stakeholders and industry partners. Using advanced analytical, statistical and modelling techniques, you'll help solve complex challenges and drive evidence-based decision-making across the business.

About You
We're looking for a highly analytical and technically skilled professional who can combine strong problem-solving capabilities with a collaborative and practical approach. You'll be comfortable working with complex datasets, turning technical information into meaningful insights that support business decisions and strategic planning.
You'll have a degree in a numerically focused discipline and a proven ability to undertake data analysis, modelling and statistical assessment. Experience using programming and coding languages such as Python and VBA will be important, alongside advanced Microsoft Excel skills and a track record of producing clear, high-quality technical reports. You'll also be confident using GIS software, such as ArcGIS or QGIS, to analyse and present spatial data effectively.

As this role involves working with a broad range of stakeholders, you'll possess excellent communication skills and be able to present complex technical information in a clear and understandable way. A full UK driving licence is essential as you will be required to occasionally visit our operational sites.
We're particularly interested in candidates who can bring additional specialist knowledge and experience. A postgraduate qualification, such as an MSc, would be advantageous, as would an understanding of hydrology and water resources management. Experience developing or using hydrological and water resources models, along with familiarity with industry tools such as Aquator or Pywr, would be highly beneficial.
Knowledge of hydrometric monitoring, flow gauging or hydrogeology would further strengthen your application, as would a genuine interest in using technical expertise to help shape sustainable water resource solutions for the future.
