Job Description
The HMRC Modern Workplace Platform team are looking for two Senior Technical Architects to join the architecture team.
The Modern Workplace Platform team are engaged in an exciting period of modernisation of the departmental enterprise IT platform and the services we provide, placing us in the vanguard of HMRCs modernisation strategy. This ambition is enabling us to significantly grow our team of architects, and we are therefore seeking up to two motivated technical architects who share our excitement about the opportunities we can offer.
We are in the process of transitioning from a traditional Microsoft on-premises infrastructure architecture onto a cloud hosted modern workplace platform, which enables us to support HMRC’s flexible working environment.
That Environment Includes
- Personal User Devices, currently using on prem device management systems such as AD/MECM/GPO, moving to modern cloud-based device management tools and technologies such as Intune, Windows Autopilot, Apple Business Manager all underpinned by EntraID.
- Application and desktop virtualisation, moving towards cloud hosted virtualised devices.
- Enterprise Audio Visual collaboration tools (moving to Teams Rooms and in room AV technology) and Intelligent Building IT integration.
- Internal Identity and directory services (Active Directory, PingDS), including multiple directory integration and synchronisation, moving towards EntraID and modern identity management and tools.
- Enterprise productivity, messaging and collaboration tools, primarily Microsoft 365.
- Device and Infrastructure Management and Monitoring systems (Device Build, Software Delivery, Security systems, Device and User Experience monitoring).
Job Description
Within your area of specialisation, you will be responsible for:
- Creating high level solution designs, service designs and technical roadmaps, underpinning our Modern Workplace architecture, and supporting HMRC’s IT strategy.
- Providing technical governance for new or updated solutions utilising existing group platforms, the introduction of new services or removal of end of life services.
- Delivering technical consultancy throughout the service lifecycle from project to service delivery and defining best practice and standards for the platform.
- Maintaining technology currency in your areas of focus through market research and vendor relationships and using these insights to maintain roadmaps and direction.
- Communicating the vision and working with customers to ensure business needs are represented in the technology roadmaps.

Person specification
A broad IT Infrastructure background in solutions or technical architecture roles working within one or more of the domains listed within the job summary.
The ability to work in challenging and unpredictable environments, playing a key role in influencing strategic decision making and understand strategic consequences of IT decisions.
A focused approach on strategic alignment of technical design and architecture to meet business growth and direction.
Essential Criteria
- Extensive experience in authoring and updating technical designs and roadmaps, supporting HMRC strategic objectives.
- Proven experience of providing internal consultancy on potential uses and appropriateness of infrastructure technologies and driving benefits from these technologies.
- An understanding of large scale infrastructure technologies including specific experience in at least one of the following:
- End User Device Configuration
- Software Delivery
- Hybrid Cloud Computing (Azure, AWS)
- Infrastructure Security Controls
- Device Management Processes and Tools
- Internal Identity Management
- Cloud based Identity
- Identity Roles and Access Controls
Desirable Criteria
- Azure, AWS or M365 certification.
- Professional IT architecture qualifications such as TOGAF, BCS or CITP

Leeds Locations
Moves Adjustment Payment will be available for this role, provided the successful applicant is a current HMRC colleague in Bradford and meets the eligibility requirements outlined in the HMRC’s Moves Adjustment Payment guidance.
Salary and Benefits

How To Apply
As part of the application process, you will be asked to provide the following:
- A name-blind CV including your job history, full qualification details and previous experiences.
- A 500-word personal statement, describing how you meet the Person Specification and Essential Criteria
Please complete a separate statement (Max 250 words) for the Desirable Criteria where applicable. This is not essential for the role but may be considered by the vacancy-holder where candidates have the same scores at interview.
Sift
In the event of a large number of applications being received, an initial sift may be held on you CV.
At full sift your CV and your Personal Statement, will be assessed, with the successful candidates being invited to interview.
We may also raise the score required at any stage of the process if we receive a high number of applications.
Interview
During the panel interview, your Experience and technical design understanding relating to architectural design will be assessed, to determine your suitability for the role. You will also be asked a to make a 10-minute presentation that focuses on your experience of a technical design/implementation.
Interviews will take place via video link. Sift and interview dates to be confirmed. Please note that circumstances may arise that require the planned interview format to change. We will endeavour to provide you with as much notice of any change as possible.
