Role Definition
The Senior Technical Manager manages day-to-day technical delivery across ALM’s technical department. Sitting between the Head of Technical and the wider technical team, the role turns departmental priorities into controlled execution.
Reporting Line
- Reports to: Head of Technical
- Direct Reports: Technical Manager, Airworthiness Review Engineers, Technical Coordinator
Duties and Responsibilities
- Own the day-to-day operation and delivery rhythm of the technical department.
- Run the weekly technical workflow meeting and maintain visibility of all active technical workstreams.
- Manage the department workflow tracker, ensuring actions have owners, dates, status, blockers, risks, and escalation points.
- Allocate work across the Technical Manager, Airworthiness / Technical Review Engineers, and Technical Coordinator.
- Hold the technical team accountable for delivery of assigned aircraft, engine, component, transition, acquisition, return, inspection, and technical project workstreams.
- Ensure material projects have clear scope, milestones, supplier responsibilities, internal owners, decision points, and reporting cadence.
- Review weekly project updates before escalation to the Head of Technical.
- Identify slippage, weak ownership, supplier delay, cost exposure, records risk, or compliance risk early and ensure timely escalation with recommended actions.
- Ensure lease obligations, return conditions, inspection findings, and technical risks are converted into executable plans.
- Monitor performance of MROs, OEMs, CAMO providers, inspection providers, records providers, engine shops, consultants, and subcontractors across active projects.
- Standardise ALM technical outputs including inspection reports, transition trackers, maintenance status summaries, LLP/BTB reviews, records findings, technical recommendations, and close-out reports.
- Coach and develop Airworthiness / Technical Review Engineers toward future Technical Manager capability.
- Ensure the Technical Coordinator maintains effective meeting discipline, document control, workflow tracking, action logs, project administration, and reporting support.
- Act as deputy operational lead for the department during Head of Technical travel, leave, or senior external commitments.
