Technical Product Manager — Battery Storage & Solar
Company
Kight PowerHub (Kight BESS Scotland Ltd)
Contract
Permanent, full-time (open to experienced interim/fractional candidates)
Reporting To
Founder (with close working relationships to Technical Operations, Commercial and the Installer Network / Field Operations Manager)
Purpose of the Role
Kight PowerHub designs and deploys long-life battery storage systems into UK social housing at increasing scale and pace. As the installer network scales delivery in the field, Kight needs a dedicated technical owner of the product itself: someone who sits between our suppliers and our own commercial, operational and installation teams, making sure that what gets specified, built and shipped actually works as intended in occupied homes — and keeps getting better. This role complements the Installer Network (Field Operations Manager) role: where that role owns how installations get delivered in the field, this role owns what is being installed — the product specification, component and supplier quality, design assurance, and the pipeline of technical improvements that feed into it. The two roles work closely together, particularly on fault diagnosis, installer training content, and any field-driven design change.
Key Responsibilities
Supplier & Component Management
- Act as Kight's primary technical liaison with component and system suppliers plus any new suppliers introduced as the product range develops.
- Own the supplier technical relationship day to day: joint engineering calls, issue escalation, roadmap alignment, and firmware/hardware change notifications.
- Lead technical diagnosis and resolution of component-level issues working directly with the relevant supplier engineering teams to root-cause and close out.
- Negotiate technical terms with suppliers where needed (specifications, tolerances, testing/acceptance criteria, warranty and defect processes), working with Commercial on the wider contractual relationship.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Product Specification & Design Assurance
- Own and maintain the master technical product specification across the battery system, inverter, monitoring stack and app/portal interfaces, ensuring it reflects what is actually being built and deployed.
- Define and run a design review and change-control process for any change to components, firmware, wiring, or integration architecture — including supplier-initiated changes — before it reaches production installs.
- Ensure new components and configurations are properly tested and validated against the product spec (performance, safety, compliance, interoperability) prior to field deployment.
- Maintain technical documentation supporting the product — specifications, interface definitions, alert/parameter catalogues, and monitoring architecture — so it stays current as the product evolves.
- Work with the IP/patent strategy to ensure product and design decisions stay aligned with Kight's protected architecture and avoid inadvertent overlap with third-party patents.
Continuous Improvement
- Build and prioritise a product improvement backlog, drawing on field performance data, installer feedback (via the Field Operations Manager), warranty/defect trends, and supplier roadmaps.
- Translate improvement opportunities into clear technical requirements that suppliers and internal teams can act on, and track them through to delivery.
- Support the transition of assembly to Durham and Dumfries from mid-2027, ensuring the product specification, tooling and quality requirements are ready for the new assembly locations.
- Contribute technical input to product roadmap and business case decisions — e.g. cell/inverter alternatives, monitoring platform changes, warranty and cycle-life positioning.

Cross-Functional & Field Support
- Partner closely with the Installer Network (Field Operations Manager) on installer training content for the product and on diagnosing field-reported technical issues.
- Work with Technical Operations to ensure monitoring, alerting and data flows (inverter API, Toshiba monitoring dashboard, EnergiFlow) accurately reflect product performance.
- Provide technical input to commercial and marketing materials (e.g. TCO models, warranty claims, board and shareholder updates) to ensure product claims are accurate and defensible.
- Report regularly to the CEO on product technical status, open supplier issues, design risks and improvement pipeline.
What Success Looks Like
Milestone
- Product spec & documentation
- Master product specification (battery, inverter, monitoring, app/portal interfaces) consolidated, version-controlled and agreed with Technical Operations
- Product spec is the single source of truth used by suppliers, installers and commercial teams; formal change-control process in operation
- Supplier & component quality
- Technical relationships established with regular review cadence; BMU/inverter fault root-caused with a resolution plan agreed
- Faults resolved and validated in production installs; supplier quality issues tracked to closure via a defined process
- Design assurance
- Design review process defined and applied to any new component, firmware or integration change
- All active product variants (battery, inverter, monitoring, app/portal) passing design assurance sign-off before field deployment
- Continuous improvement
- Improvement backlog established, prioritised against field/warranty data and installer feedback
- First tranche of product improvements specified, supplier-agreed and in the delivery pipeline for Durham/Dumfries assembly transition
