Senior Technician

Heidelberg Materials Technical UK is seeking a highly motivated Senior Technician to join our Quality & Technical team. This is an opportunity to play a pivotal role in maintaining industry-leading quality standards across our Concrete, Asphalt, Recycled Materials and Quarry Products operations.
Working across laboratory and field environments, you will be responsible for sampling, testing, quality investigations, technical support, and laboratory management activities, helping to ensure our products consistently meet the highest standards of performance, compliance and customer satisfaction.

The Role
As a Senior Technician, you will undertake sampling, field testing and specimen preparation in accordance with relevant British Standards and company procedures. You'll support quality assurance activities across multiple sites, investigate product performance issues, conduct laboratory trials, and provide technical guidance to colleagues across production and operations teams.

This position offers the opportunity to lead by example, influence quality performance, and support the development of technicians through coaching and mentoring.
Key Responsibilities
Quality Sampling & Testing
- Carry out sampling, field testing and specimen preparation of:
- Concrete
- Asphalt
- Recycled Materials
- Quarry Products
- Ensure all activities comply with relevant British Standards and company procedures.
- Conduct product laboratory trials and testing.
- Assist with the transportation and management of test specimens.
Quality Investigations & Technical Support
- Investigate and provide feedback on quality issues across sites and depots.
- Support technical and operational teams in identifying and resolving product-related concerns.
- Undertake:
- Aggregate sampling, testing and preparation
- Asphalt sampling, testing and preparation
- Concrete sampling, testing and preparation
- Recycled materials sampling, testing and preparation
- Preliminary plant investigations
- Customer site investigations
- Product issue investigations
- Reviews of water demand in ready-mix concrete
- Plant moisture content testing
- Reviews of site practices and procedures
- Delivery and transport practice assessments
- Product consistency reviews and variance investigations
Quality & Safety Leadership
- Raise NCRs (Non-Conformance Reports) and Near Hits where appropriate.
- Challenge behaviours that negatively impact safety or quality standards.
- Promote a culture of continuous improvement and operational excellence.
- Provide leadership that motivates teams and drives high performance.
Coaching & Development
- Support the development of Quality Control Technicians, Operations Teams, Production Teams and Drivers.
- Identify training needs and provide coaching, mentoring and technical guidance.
- Assist in supervising Quality Control and Laboratory Technicians where required.

Laboratory Management
- Maintain laboratory facilities, equipment and testing environments.
- Oversee trial laboratories, specimen preparation and curing laboratories.
- Ensure testing facilities remain compliant, organised and operational.

Essential Skills & Attributes
- Experience in construction materials testing, quality control or laboratory environments.
- Strong understanding of British Standards and quality procedures.
- Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving ability.
- Strong organisational and prioritisation skills.
- Computer literate with the ability to maintain accurate records and reports.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage stakeholders at all levels.
- Flexible and committed approach to work, including occasional work outside standard hours.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a wider technical team.
- Strong leadership, coaching and mentoring capability.
