British American Tobacco UK has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Technologist – MO in Southampton

What are the key objectives and expectations from this role?

The Senior Technologist – MO role is chiefly responsible for the execution of assigned tasks using laboratory equipment and expertise across a range of projects and activities within the New Categories product development portfolio to support the delivery of the commercial vision of a product in the R&D pipeline.

What is the direct impact of this role on the team or organization?

This role will utilise knowledge of New Categories lab methodologies and broad scientific principles to assist a team of senior scientists in completing an element of a product development plan, whilst using this team experience to build out personal capabilities to expand technical knowledge of New Category products.

Your Key Responsibilities Will Include

  • Accountable for the timely delivery of assigned activities across the MO product development portfolio, ensuring tasks are completed in line with project plans, workstream requirements, and product launch timelines.
  • Operate laboratory equipment and testing capabilities effectively, applying technical knowledge of testing methodologies, equipment, and scientific principles to support product development and project delivery.
  • Follow established laboratory procedures, compliance standards, and scientific methodologies to ensure high-quality, accurate, and reliable execution of assigned activities.
  • Collaborate closely with senior product developers and scientists to build technical expertise, while proactively identifying, escalating, and mitigating risks that may impact project delivery or laboratory operations.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of all technologies, formulations, compositions, and development activities, safeguarding the uniqueness and integrity of BAT's products and innovations.

What are we looking for?

  • Demonstrated ability to manage and deliver a portfolio of tasks within defined timescales, effectively planning and prioritising activities based on business and project needs.
  • Broad understanding of product research and development, testing methodologies, data interpretation, and laboratory equipment, with the ability to work safely in a chemical laboratory handling solvents, acids, and highly toxic substances.
  • Proven experience managing and collaborating with internal and external collaborators, supported by excellent interpersonal and communication skills to drive effective project outcomes.
  • Ability to apply scientific and technical knowledge to support product development activities, ensuring adherence to laboratory procedures, safety requirements, and quality standards.
  • Minimum of degree-level qualification in a relevant field of study (i.e., Chemistry, Food science, Technology science, Materials science, engineering, etc)
