About the Role
We are currently looking for a highly motivated Senior Software Design Engineer to join our Global New Product Introduction (NPI) team. The position will be based at our York office and will be part of a team responsible for developing the software architecture, frameworks, and infrastructure that enable product validation across Adtran products.
This is a software engineering role focused on designing and delivering the systems, tools, and services that support product validation, test automation, and engineering productivity. While working closely with test engineers and development teams, the primary focus of the role is the design and implementation of software architectures, platforms, infrastructure, and data-driven engineering solutions. It is a diverse and technically varied position, offering opportunities to work across software architecture, databases, server infrastructure, automation frameworks, networking, and emerging AI-driven engineering solutions.
As a Senior Software Design Engineer, you will act as a technical authority within your area of expertise, applying broad technical knowledge and sound engineering judgement to solve complex problems, guide architectural decisions, and contribute to the successful delivery of key projects.
The role requires significant experience in designing and delivering complex software systems, from architecture and solution design through implementation, integration, deployment, and long-term support. You will provide technical leadership across projects while remaining hands-on in the design and development of the software frameworks, infrastructure, and services that support efficient product verification and delivery.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain software architectures, frameworks, and infrastructure that support the validation of current and future Adtran products.
- Collaborate with software engineers on the design and development of software solutions, contributing to architectural decisions and the implementation of scalable, maintainable, and reliable systems that support long-term product strategy.
- Work closely with test engineers to standardise and optimise validation methodologies, automate processes, and consolidate test sequences across multiple product lines.
- Improve the quality, consistency, and structure of engineering and test data to enable AI-driven analysis, improved fault diagnosis, increased automation, and reduced product test times.
- Contribute to software engineering best practices, including architecture reviews, code reviews, automated testing, and continuous integration.
- Lead or contribute to the development of advanced software applications, tools, and services that enhance engineering productivity and product quality.
- Take technical ownership of server-based systems and services supporting the validation environment, including responsibility for database architecture, data management, data synchronisation, data integrity, and associated infrastructure.
- Develop, maintain, and support solutions for network configuration, data synchronisation, database operations, web services, and other engineering platforms.
- Provide technical leadership and guidance on software design, architecture, and engineering best practices, working collaboratively with engineers across multiple disciplines and sites.
- Support the investigation and resolution of issues within manufacturing and test environments, including occasional involvement in the diagnosis of test system hardware failures.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
