Coventry and Warwickshire Pathology Services (CWPS)
CWPS offers a range of diagnostic tests across various departments. The Cellular Pathology service handles approximately 56,000 cases annually across three NHS Trusts: University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust, George Eliot NHS Trust, and South Warwickshire University NHS Foundation Trust.
CWPS has received funding for additional laboratory staff to support the increasing demand for Histology case processing and Cancer Services across the Trusts. We are seeking a Specialist Dissector or Trainee to join our experienced dissection team.
Role Requirements
- Specialist Dissector: Must hold HCPC registration and the IBMS Diploma of Expert Practice (DEP) for Dissection.
- Trainee Dissector: Must have HCPC registration, experience in dissection at a band 6 level, and a commitment to obtaining the IBMS DEP in dissection.
The post holder will work at UHCW and South Warwick Hospital sites, with shifts of 7.5 hours between 0700-1900 from Monday to Saturday on a rotational basis.
Compensation
The trainee dissector will be paid as a band 6 until the IBMS DEP is achieved.
Interview
The interview is likely to be conducted on the 4th of September, subject to availability.

Successful applicants will need to provide an immunisation and vaccination report from their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP.
Responsibilities
- Perform, allocate, and supervise tasks required for a fit-for-purpose medical laboratory service.
- Analyse and select clinical samples to provide a diagnostic service.
- Achieve the objectives of efficient and effective patient care and effective resource management across the CWPS Network at the UHCW and SWFT sites.
About the Department
The Histology laboratories are based at University Hospital Coventry and Warwick Hospital. This is an exciting time to join the department as we are implementing new laboratory equipment, including the Sectra Digital Pathology solution, brand new Hamamatsu scanners, and an upgrade to the Pathology LIMS system in 2026.
As a trainee, you will receive support from an experienced team, protected time in your schedule, and opportunities for external course attendance to support your IBMS DEP dissection qualification.
Job Scope
- Breadth of specimens includes categories RCpath A-C, routine specimens, and detailed SOPs.
- Understand the limits of practice and know when to forward cases to pathologists or Specialist scientific leads.
- Some training in D and E specimen is expected.
