Senior Transport Planner

Location: Manchester
Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience
Job Type: Full-time
Working Pattern: Hybrid

The Opportunity

We are looking for an experienced and motivated Senior Transport Planner to join a growing transport planning team in Manchester.

This is an exciting opportunity for a transport professional looking to take the next step in their career and work on a diverse portfolio of development and infrastructure projects across the UK. You will be involved in projects from initial feasibility and transport assessments through to planning applications, detailed design and implementation. Working closely with clients, local authorities, developers and multidisciplinary project teams, you will have the opportunity to take ownership of projects while developing your technical and commercial skills.

The Role

As a Senior Transport Planner, you will:

  • Lead and manage transport planning projects from inception through to completion.
  • Prepare Transport Assessments, Transport Statements, Travel Plans and other technical reports.
  • Undertake transport and accessibility assessments to support planning applications.
  • Provide technical transport advice to clients, developers and project teams.
  • Liaise with local highway authorities, National Highways and other stakeholders.
  • Manage and coordinate inputs from multidisciplinary consultants and project teams.
  • Review and interpret traffic, transport and accessibility data.
  • Undertake junction capacity assessments and transport modelling where appropriate.
  • Support the development of sustainable transport and active travel strategies.
  • Assist with project budgets, programmes and resource management.
  • Attend client meetings, design team meetings and planning discussions.
  • Contribute to the preparation of fee proposals and business development activities.
  • Support and mentor junior members of the transport planning team.

About You

We are looking for someone who is technically capable, commercially aware and confident working with clients and stakeholders.

You will ideally have:

  • A degree in Transport Planning, Civil Engineering, Geography or a related discipline.
  • Several years' experience within a transport planning consultancy, developer or local authority environment.
  • Strong knowledge of UK transport planning and development management processes.
  • Experience preparing Transport Assessments, Transport Statements and Travel Plans.
  • Experience working on planning applications and development proposals.
  • Good understanding of relevant national and local transport policy.
  • Experience with industry-standard transport modelling or assessment software would be advantageous.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong project management and organisational skills.
  • The ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines effectively.
  • A proactive, commercially minded approach.
  • The confidence to engage with clients, local authorities and other stakeholders.
  • Chartered status or a relevant professional qualification, or a willingness to work towards one, would be advantageous.
