AECOM is currently searching for an experienced Senior Transport Planner to join our Development Planning and Management team in either Birmingham or Bristol.

We are looking to enhance and grow our team with an individual who has a strong technical background and shares our enthusiasm and determination to support our expanding and varied workload. We offer a friendly and enjoyable working environment and the role would suit an enthusiastic Transport Planner who is looking to take the next step in their career.

This role is in our Central, South West and Wales region, with opportunities to work across the UK. We work with private and public sector clients, architects, planners and other development professionals across all sectors throughout the development life cycle; providing services from initial site feasibility and due diligence through to completion. This role therefore offers the opportunity to work with colleagues from different offices, as well as teams from various professions, on a diverse and interesting range of projects.

Our current portfolio of works comprises a diverse mix of projects across the residential, healthcare, defence, renewable energy and education sectors. AECOM has delivered six of the 15 Solar DCOs consented in England, with multiple renewable energy projects in our pipeline. We support major organisations such as JLR, the NHS and Universities such as Bristol, UWE and Exeter, in developing sustainable Estates. We are promoting a range of strategic residential sites for private sector Clients, and supporting Local Authorities in producing Local Plans and in Development Management. This provides our staff with a variety of exciting projects to deliver.

Our core transport-related work is in support of our clients’ planning application submissions, including documents such as Transport Assessments/ Statements, Travel Plans, Delivery and Servicing Plans, Construction Traffic Management Plans and Preliminary Design work as well as assisting them in site masterplan development. As part of our wider transport planning team, we also offer opportunities to get involved in a broad spectrum of projects including transport strategies, business cases, and scheme promotion.

The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate a proven background in development related transport analysis and assessment. We would expect strong communication skills which we would continue to develop and experience of, or a willingness to, help develop junior staff. We are looking for someone who is looking at the opportunities available to further develop their career and is enthusiastic about working on a range of projects which support development at various stages of its life.

Job Responsibilities

  • Supporting and taking responsibility for the production and delivery of Transport Assessments, Transport Statements, Travel Plans, Masterplans and other technical reports/ deliverables to support development.
  • Working with other members of the Development Planning team, private and public sector clients, architects, planners and other professionals throughout the development life cycle.
  • Mentoring of junior staff and supervising work carried out by junior members of the Development Planning team, ensuring that it is to the appropriate technical standard and is delivered to programme and budget.
  • Supporting the preparation of fee proposals for new projects and working with the Team Leader and Project Managers to ensure projects are delivered to budget and programme.
  • Supporting and attending meetings including client meetings and undertaking negotiations with Local Authorities and other regulatory bodies.

Qualifications

Ready to push the limits of what’s possible?

Here’s what we’re looking for:

  • A degree in an analytical subject such as Engineering, Geography, Mathematics, Economics or similar.
  • Membership of a relevant professional institution (CIHT, SoRSA, CILT, IHE, TPS, ICE).
  • A Masters degree in a relevant subject is desirable, but is not essential.
  • An excellent understanding and proven experience in the field of Development Planning.
  • Experience in the preparation and ownership of development-related Transport Assessments, Travel Plans and similar.
  • Proficient in using and analysing data from the various transportation software packages and be able to produce high-quality reports including transport strategies, feasibility reports, transport assessments, transport statements and travel plans.
  • Experience of understanding client briefs, developing fee proposals and the effective delivery of project work.
  • Experience of liaising with clients, local authorities and other regulatory bodies and familiarity with the UK planning system.
  • Highly motivated individual with excellent communication skills and ideally a member of a relevant professional body.
  • A solid track record of having worked on a variety of transportation planning projects with experience of dealing directly with clients and local authorities.
  • Strong communication skills able to liaise with local authority and government officers.
  • Ability to communicate and present confidently, including in public forums.
  • Ability to work effectively in an unsupervised environment both individually and as part of a team.
  • Leading and taking responsibility for pieces of work and delegating/ mentoring junior staff in its production.
  • Good presentation and technical writing skills using MS Office products (including Excel and Word).
