Skycutter is a UK-based designer and manufacturer of advanced small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS) for both commercial and defense applications. The company combines state-of-the-art drone component technologies to offer the very best technologies to our customers. The small and multidisciplinary team consists of highly experienced aircraft design engineers, fuel cell specialists, electrical and software engineers. The team focuses on safety, usability, and mission effectiveness to help customers deliver high-quality services.
Role Description
The Senior UAS Engineer role is a full-time, on-site position based in Loughborough. The person in this role will lead the design, integration, and testing of advanced sUAS platforms. Day-to-day responsibilities include:
- Developing and refining airframe designs
- Integrating complex radio and onboard companion computers
- Ensuring reliable performance of propulsion and control systems

The Senior UAS Engineer will work closely with software, electrical, and payload specialists to:

- Define system requirements
- Perform trade studies
- Validate designs through simulation and flight testing
Additional tasks include:
- Authoring technical documentation
- Supporting certification and safety assessments
- Mentoring junior engineers
- Collaborating with customers to understand mission needs and translate them into engineering solutions
This role will require periods of travel to support customers internationally, with a focus in the United States.
Qualifications
- Strong background in aircraft or UAS engineering, including airframe design, propulsion, and system integration.
- Experience with power and energy systems, and associated electrical architectures for unmanned aircraft.
- Experience with Betaflight, Ardupilot, Mission Planner, and QGroundControl.
- Proficiency in CAD and simulation tools for mechanical, aerodynamic, or structural analysis, and familiarity with systems engineering practices.
- Hands-on experience with flight testing, integration of sensors and payloads (e.g., optical-flow sensors, LiDAR, cameras, specialised instruments), and troubleshooting UAS platforms.
- Ability to lead projects, collaborate in a multidisciplinary team, and communicate complex technical concepts clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field; equivalent practical experience considered.

3 years' experience in commercial or defence UAS applications is essential.
- Familiarity with advanced features such as GPS-denied navigation, EW-resilience radio solutions a plus.
- Knowledge of relevant aviation standards, safety practices, and regulatory considerations for unmanned systems a plus.
