The opportunity
You have built the technical judgement to underwrite complex commercial business, you understand what makes a scheme work, and you know the difference between simply administering a portfolio and actively improving it.
This role gives you the opportunity to operate at that more influential level, helping shape a specialist Commercial Schemes portfolio, assess new opportunities, improve performance and work directly with brokers and internal stakeholders to drive profitable growth.
You will play a key role in developing a specialist Commercial Schemes portfolio, with genuine input into both existing business and new opportunities. The remit covers far more than individual underwriting decisions. You will assess new schemes, work with brokers and Sales colleagues to progress opportunities, support implementation and use portfolio data to identify where performance can be improved. You will have visibility across the wider commercial plan, which means your judgement will influence where the business invests, which opportunities are worth pursuing and how the portfolio evolves over time. The role also offers plenty of senior exposure without forcing you into a traditional management route. You can remain close to underwriting and broker relationships while taking on broader responsibility and influence.
What the role looks like

- Working closely with brokers and Sales colleagues to identify and assess new scheme opportunities.

- Using MI and portfolio performance data to identify trends, profitability issues and opportunities for further growth.
- Reviewing existing schemes and helping shape actions where performance can be strengthened.
- Working across Underwriting, Sales and Operations to make sure opportunities move forward effectively.
- Contributing to the wider commercial business plan and bringing market insight into portfolio decisions.
- Coaching and supporting underwriting colleagues, sharing experience and helping develop capability across the wider team.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Who this could suit
You will already have a strong commercial underwriting background and enough experience to operate independently with brokers and senior internal stakeholders.
Schemes or affinity experience will be a strong advantage, but this could also suit a commercially minded Senior Underwriter who has worked closely with delegated or portfolio-based business and is ready for broader responsibility.
You will be comfortable looking beyond an individual risk and thinking about performance across an entire portfolio. That means understanding profitability, spotting trends, assessing the quality of new opportunities and knowing when a proposition needs to change.
You will also have strong broker relationships, good commercial instincts and the confidence to influence people across different parts of the business.
The business
You will be joining an established UK commercial insurer with a strong reputation for combining technical underwriting with a genuinely people-focused culture.
