HDI is a Corporate & Specialty Insurer part of the Talanx Group. With over 120 years of experience, HDI operates across five continents, around 40 countries and employs over 5,000 people worldwide.

We are seeking a Senior Underwriter to join our Liability Global Risk team for our International region which covers all risks outside of Continental Europe including; London, the Americas, South Africa and APAC.

This is a unique opportunity to join a global team with a broad underwriting appetite and significant underwriting authority. You'll be able to influence strategy, contribute to innovative market propositions, and play an active role in the continued growth of the Liability Global Risk portfolio.

You will build relationships across our international network, with opportunities for overseas travel where desired.

The role

  • Underwriting and prospecting of Liability Global Risk accounts for the International region, which constitute of complex and volatile liability industries such as OEM Motor Vehicle Manufacturers, Agrochemicals, Pharmaceuticals and Medical Device Manufacturers.
  • Develop and maintain a profitable book of business in line with the business plan.
  • Have a significant impact on new business growth and contribute to innovation, strategy and projects as required.
  • Provide a developmental, monitoring and referral function for more junior members of the team.
  • Possess a significant external profile, positively representing the Liability Global Risk proposition to customers and brokers including at events such trade association meetings and product relevant forums.

Key accountabilities

  • Actively engage with brokers and clients in the Liability Global Risk segment to promote HDI as an insurer of choice, build close and trusted relationships with key broker and client partners and provide excellent service at all times.
  • Assess and underwrite individual risks, determining appropriate terms, conditions and pricing within authority levels.
  • Monitor portfolio performance, identifying opportunities to optimise profitability, growth and risk selection.
  • Support the development and execution of portfolio steering strategies using underwriting insight, management information and actuarial analysis.
  • Collaborate with Distribution and other Product Lines to identify and maximise cross-selling opportunities.
  • Work closely with colleagues across Claims, Risk Consulting, Finance, Compliance, Network and international branch offices.
  • Represent HDI at market events, conferences and industry forums, enhancing the visibility of the Liability Global Risk proposition.
  • Contribute to strategic initiatives, projects and continuous improvement activities.

Skills & experience

  • Significant underwriting experience within Liability insurance, ideally gained within industrial or international markets.
  • Strong individual risk underwriting expertise, as well as the ability to understand how risk selection impacts the portfolio mix and portfolio performance.
  • Experience analysing portfolio performance and making data-driven underwriting decisions.
  • Numerate and able to independently perform complex technical pricing and able to engage in mature, professional discussions with pricing and reserving actuaries.
  • Strong knowledge of broker distribution and international insurance markets.
  • Understanding of policy construction, coverage interpretation and relevant legal frameworks.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; comfortable with phone & face to face discussions with underwriters, brokers and other stakeholders.
  • Ability to set clear goals and take responsibility for decisions and can explain and justify the need for certain actions.
  • Demonstrates curiosity alongside a positive and proactive mindset and a willingness to embrace change.
  • Shows innovation and creative problem solving skills.
  • Ability to organise own workload effectively and work under pressure to meet service standards and deadlines.
  • Invested in own development pursuing continuous improvement and learning opportunities.
