Role: Senior Underwriter - Marine & Energy Liability

Location: London
Position: Full time, permanent

About the Role

The Senior Underwriter - Marine and Energy Liabilities is responsible for underwriting and developing a portfolio of marine and energy liability business, contributing to the profitable growth of an established and well-performing account.

The book wrote around 81 million last year with 95% retention, of which around 23 million is led and 57 million followed. It has broadened well beyond its traditional upstream base, with significant growth in power and utilities, and continues to develop as the energy market itself changes.

The team runs as one, rather than as separate marine and energy silos, and is supported by a specialist marine and energy claims function and by the financial security of Mitsui Sumitomo. For an underwriter, that combination means a genuine lead book, a broad appetite, and the backing to write meaningful lines.

About the Job

While there is rarely a typical day, here’s a snapshot of some of the key parts of the job:

  • Underwrite and manage a portfolio of marine and energy liability risks, making sound long-term decisions within the agreed appetite and authority.
  • Contribute to the lead book, taking underwriting positions the market follows.
  • Proactively develop and pursue new business opportunities, clients, and products.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers and trading partners, representing the syndicate at market meetings and events.
  • Structure solutions that balance client need with profitability, and negotiate terms with confidence.
  • Monitor portfolio performance, identifying trends in pricing, claims, and emerging risk, and contribute to portfolio reviews.
  • Support the continued development of the account as the energy market shifts, including the growth we are seeing in power and utilities.
  • Work closely with our marine and energy claims colleagues so that the claims proposition forms part of what we offer clients.
  • Analyse and write risks in accordance with our appetite and guidelines, making sound, profitable long-term decisions.
  • Understand and negotiate wordings in line with corporate standards.
  • Undertake analysis of the portfolio to identify business opportunities, products, and clients, building a robust business case for each.
  • Drive the client experience through oversight of issues raised, including product design, liaison, and claims management.
  • Act as a peer reviewer on risks and material endorsements as required.
  • Play an active role in regular underwriting meetings and ensure the risk entry system is maintained.
  • Produce accurate class reports, review underwriting figures regularly so that unusual trends or adverse movements are dealt with, and monitor premium payments.
  • Remain alert to developments affecting the class, its profitability, and its opportunities, reporting to leadership as appropriate.
  • Maintain underwriting documentation and records to a high standard.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
