Senior Underwriter – Marine Liability

Location: London

The Team

You'll be joining the Marine Liability team within Allianz Commercial, one of the world's largest and most respected marine insurers. Our Marine underwriting operation sits within the broader Hull & Liability division, working alongside our Cargo specialists to deliver market-leading solutions across the full spectrum of marine risk. Marine and Liability are both key strategic business lines for Allianz Commercial, and our continued investment in these areas reflects our commitment to providing innovative, best-in-class coverage for clients operating in complex and dynamic maritime environments.

Our Marine Liability portfolio spans a diverse and technically rich range of sub-classes, including Protection & Indemnity (excess P&I Club reinsurance and specialist operations), Charterer's Liability, Ports & Terminals, Marinas, Shiprepairer's Liability, Marine & Energy Offshore Contractors, and Umbrella Liabilities. We provide third-party liability coverage for property damage and bodily injury, first-party physical loss and damage, and business interruption — supporting shipowners, operators, terminal businesses, and contractors across the global maritime industry.

The Impact You Will Have

As a Senior Underwriter in our Marine Liability team, you'll play a pivotal role in shaping the profitability and growth of the portfolio — underwriting both new and renewal business to meet regional and global targets. You'll take ownership of our most significant accounts and client relationships, leading negotiations on participation, pricing, and terms to secure the best outcomes for the business. Beyond your own book, you'll be a trusted technical authority and referral point for the wider underwriting team, actively mentoring and developing talent at all levels. Your deep expertise will see you recognised as the go-to specialist in at least one marine liability sub-class, while your ability to build and sustain strong broker and client relationships will be central to our continued success in the market.

Some Of Your Specific Responsibilities Could Include

Underwrite Profitable Business

  • Underwrite large new and renewal accounts to meet top and bottom line targets (regionally including global elements). Negotiate participation, pricing and terms and conditions with brokers. Proactively manage capacity.
  • Underwrite and evaluate Natural Catastrophe Accumulation, ensuring an understanding of catastrophe modelling and interpretation of scenarios (for relevant LoBs). Underwrite International Insurance Programs (for relevant LoBs).
  • Specialized technical expertise / lead for at least one sub-LoB

Underwriting Approach and Compliance

  • Underwrite in line with LoB governance framework - e.g. Underwriting Authorities, global MSU, Underwriting Guidelines, Rules and Principles.
  • Ensure contract certainty is achieved on all accounts at time of inception.
  • Ensure utilisation of global pricing tools.
  • Ensure placing and binding of FAC Reinsurance prior to policy inception.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
