Senior VFX Engineer
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior VFX Engineer based in United Kingdom.
This is a senior individual contributor role focused on the technology and runtime systems that power real-time visual effects in a major Unity3D game project. You will work at the intersection of VFX, Technical Art, Rendering, and Engineering, turning creative concepts into scalable and production-ready solutions. The role combines shader development, particle systems, GPU-driven effects, runtime architecture, tooling, and performance optimization. You will have significant technical ownership, from rapid prototyping and architectural decisions through to production implementation. Working closely with artists and engineers, you will help balance visual ambition with performance, scalability, and maintainability. This is an opportunity to directly shape the technology that enables high-quality real-time effects across a large game.
Accountabilities
- Develop scalable runtime systems for high-frequency gameplay effects, including pooling, shared emitters, batching, prioritization, and effect budgets.
- Design and implement shaders using HLSL, Shader Graph, Amplify, or comparable technologies.
- Build and optimize particle-based effects using mesh particles, trails, flipbooks, procedural techniques, and GPU-driven approaches.
- Create artist-facing Unity tools, including custom inspectors, validators, asset processors, batch workflows, and reusable production utilities.
- Optimize VFX for mobile and other performance-constrained platforms, with a focus on GPU performance, memory usage, overdraw, shader complexity, and runtime efficiency.
- Collaborate closely with VFX Artists, Technical Artists, Gameplay Engineers, and Rendering Engineers to translate creative requirements into robust technical solutions.
- Prototype new rendering and VFX approaches, validate their technical feasibility, and bring successful solutions through to production.
- Establish reusable templates, workflows, documentation, and technical standards that improve the efficiency and consistency of the wider VFX team.
- Act as a bridge between artistic and engineering disciplines, making informed technical decisions that balance visual quality, scalability, and performance.
- Review and improve existing systems while leaving behind clean, maintainable technology that benefits the broader team.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
