OVERVIEW:

The D. E. Shaw group seeks a skilled senior engineer to join its Systems team and lead the modernization of the firm’s virtualization platform. This individual contributor role offers the chance to operate within a mature production setting while driving thoughtful change through evaluation, design, and execution in a collaborative and engaging work environment.

WHAT YOU'LL DO DAY-TO-DAY:

  • Lead the build-out of a new virtualization platform, including running proof-of-concepts and defining migration paths from current platforms.
  • Own and maintain current virtualization platforms and storage solutions in our production environment, ensuring system availability, performance, and resource optimization.
  • Develop automation and tooling to improve reliability, scalability, and operational efficiency.
  • Plan and execute virtualization and storage migrations with cross-functional teams.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR:

  • At least ten years of hands-on experience building and supporting compute platforms in production environments, with a solid understanding of availability, performance, and resource management.
  • Expertise in modern open-source virtualization platforms and associated technologies such as KubeVirt and Kubernetes, with solid grounding in KVM and Linux. Experience with commercial platforms such as VMware and Hyper-V is also a plus.
  • Background working with storage systems and SAN technologies, including relevant storage protocols, along with experience using at least one software-defined storage platform.
  • Excellent communication, organization, and time-management skills, with the ability to operate independently and drive initiatives forward.
  • Comfort asking questions and demonstrating intellectual honesty about knowledge gaps while owning large, complex initiatives.
  • Ability to develop automation and tooling in a language such as Python or Go; a degree in computer science or another technical discipline is preferred.
