Job Title: Senior VMware Engineer

Type: Contractor

Location: Glasgow or London (hybrid)

Duration: 6-12 months initial

Vetting: SC security clearance or eligibility

The Senior VMware Engineer will provide expert-level technical leadership and engineering support across the organisation's VMware infrastructure estate. The role is responsible for the design, implementation, support, optimisation, and lifecycle management of VMware platforms, ensuring the environment remains secure, resilient, performant, and aligned to business and technical objectives.

The successful candidate will lead the delivery of infrastructure projects, platform upgrades, automation initiatives, and service improvements while providing senior-level operational support across production and non-production environments. Acting as the VMware Subject Matter Expert (SME), the role will support both strategic transformation programmes and business-as-usual operations, driving platform stability, modernisation, and continuous improvement.

Essential Skills

  • Significant experience working in a Senior VMware Engineer, Virtualisation Engineer, or Infrastructure Engineer role within a large-scale enterprise environment.
  • Extensive hands-on experience administering and supporting:
    • VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF)
    • VSAN
    • NSX
    • PowerCLI
    • Server Hardware
    • Aria
  • Strong understanding of enterprise virtualisation, datacentre infrastructure, and hybrid hosting environments.
  • Experience managing VMware platform upgrades, migrations, lifecycle management, and transformation programmes.
  • Strong knowledge of VMware infrastructure security, platform hardening, patching, and compliance requirements.
  • Knowledge of virtual networking concepts and infrastructure integration.
  • Advanced PowerShell and PowerCLI scripting experience.
  • Experience implementing automation and operational improvement initiatives.
  • Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills across compute, storage, networking, and virtualisation technologies.
  • Experience supporting business-critical infrastructure in highly available environments.
  • Familiarity with monitoring, alerting, observability, and capacity management platforms.
  • Experience working within Agile delivery and project-focused environments.
