Senior/Principal Hydraulic Modeller – Bristol, UK

About the Role

Join AECOM’s Water Resources team in Bristol and become a key contributor to our dynamic UK&I Water Resources group, supporting projects from flood risk assessments to large-scale infrastructure development.

This exciting opportunity is focused on leading technical delivery, promoting best practices in hydraulic modelling, and fostering talent within a collaborative team. You’ll play a pivotal role in shaping solutions that protect communities and infrastructure across the UK.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and execute 1D-2D hydraulic modelling for:

    • Fluvial, surface water, and tidal flood risk assessments
    • Hydraulic modelling for private/public sector clients
    • Training of junior members (graduates, high potentials)
  • Support flood risk management through technical work such as:

    • Flood Risk Assessments
    • Hydrological assessments
    • Green infrastructure/sustainable urban drainage design
    • Regulatory reporting and environmental statements

  • Quality assurance of technical deliverables, including model reviews and best-practice mentorship

  • Client liaison to refine scope, budgets, and success criteria, facilitating project success

  • Support bid proposal preparation for both internal and external clients


What We’re Looking For

Essential Requirements

✔ Degree (2:1 or above) in Engineering, Geography, Environmental Science, or related disciplines ✔ Extensive hands-on experience with 1D-2D hydraulic modelling software:

  • Flood Modeller Pro, TUFLOW, InfoWorks ICM ✔ Proficiency in GIS tools: QGIS, ArcGIS, MapInfo ✔ Demonstrated track record in:
  • Leading hydraulic modelling projects for flood risk/water management
  • Client/stakeholder engagement
  • Delivering within technical/quality standards

✔ Evidence of:

  • Quality-checked technical reporting
  • Proposal/Tender preparation
  • Able to mentor junior consultants

✔ Encouaged behaviours:

  • Strong problem-solving mindset
  • Results-driven with commercial judgement
  • Selective remote support where needed (hybrid model)

Desirable Qualifications

☑ Advanced degree (M.Sc./Ph.D.) in engineering/science ☑ Chartership (ICE/CIWEM) or progress towards it ☑ Technical expertise in:

  • Hydrological flow estimation by WINFAP-FEH or ReFH2
  • Flood Risk Assessments
