Typical Activities
Working within multidisciplinary engineering teams and collaborating with Software, Engineering and Product colleagues, the Senior or Principal Software Engineer will design, develop, test and deliver complex, secure embedded software solutions across a range of COTS and bespoke hardware platforms.
You Will
- Design and implement reliable, secure and maintainable embedded and user-facing software applications
- Develop and modify board support packages, low-level drivers, filesystems and middleware
- Optimise software for performance, determinism, robustness and resource-constrained environments
- Conduct code reviews against defined coding standards and support high-quality, testable software design
- Break down technical tasks, estimate work and contribute to technical proposals, effort estimates and risk assessments
- Produce and review technical documentation, including requirements, architecture, designs and test plans
- Participate in Agile team activities including stand-ups, sprint planning and design reviews
- Support software testing, debugging and integration across embedded systems and hardware platforms
- Identify and implement improvements to development workflows, tooling, automation and engineering processes
- Share technical knowledge and contribute to a collaborative engineering culture

What We're Looking For
- Strong commercial experience developing embedded software, with significant experience using C in real-time or embedded environments
- Strong understanding of embedded software architecture, including kernel-space and user-space development
- Experience developing software for Linux and embedded operating systems, including real-time environments
- Strong embedded systems debugging and problem-solving skills
- Experience with software quality and testing practices, including unit/system testing and static or dynamic analysis
- Understanding of network communications protocols, including TCP/IP and ARP
- Experience using Git-based source control and modern branching and CI workflows
- Understanding of secure application design, defensive programming and secure software development principles
- Ability to produce clear technical documentation and communicate complex concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary engineering teams, taking ownership of technical activities and contributing to continuous improvement

Desirable
- Experience with Rust and/or Python
- Experience with build systems and tools such as Yocto, Buildroot, GNU Make or CMake
- Experience with Docker or similar container technologies for development, build and testing
- Knowledge of cryptography, secure communications protocols and key management
- Experience with formally verified microkernels, fuzzing, UML-based design or network analysis tools such as Wireshark and tcpdump

Qualifications & Eligibility
To Be Eligible For This Position You Must
- Have significant professional experience in embedded software engineering appropriate to a Senior or Principal level;
- Be a British citizen; and
- Hold or be eligible for UK National Security Vetting (NSV) - SC level clearance.
