Server Systems Administrator

We’re looking for an experienced Server Systems Administrator to join our Technology Team and play a key role in maintaining the server infrastructure that underpins Wessex Internet’s operations and customer services.

This is a hands-on role where you’ll be responsible for the day-to-day administration, maintenance, monitoring and optimisation of our server environment, ensuring our systems remain secure, resilient, reliable and highly available.

You’ll work across Linux and Windows server environments, virtualisation platforms and supporting infrastructure. You’ll troubleshoot technical issues, monitor system performance, identify opportunities for improvement and contribute to wider technology projects.

With our server infrastructure supporting critical business and customer-facing services, this role is ideally suited to someone who takes ownership, enjoys solving technical problems and is always looking for ways to make systems more robust and efficient.

What you’ll be doing as a Server Systems Administrator:

  • Administer and maintain Linux and Windows server environments, including Proxmox and other virtualisation technologies.
  • Manage patching, configuration, monitoring, performance and capacity, ensuring systems remain secure, reliable and highly available.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve server, hardware, software and infrastructure issues, including vendor escalations and out-of-hours support for critical systems.
  • Develop and improve automation, scripting, configuration management and monitoring to increase efficiency and system resilience.
  • Contribute to infrastructure, cloud, security and wider Technology projects, identifying opportunities to improve performance, availability and scalability.
  • Share technical knowledge and support colleagues, helping to build technical capability and resilience across the Technology Team.

Key Requirements for the Server Systems Administrator role:

  • Proven experience administering Linux and Windows servers in an environment where uptime, availability and reliability are critical.
  • Experience with virtualisation technologies, ideally Proxmox, together with a good understanding of server infrastructure and data centre networking.
  • Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving and incident management skills, with the ability to work effectively under time pressure.
  • Knowledge of cyber security, configuration management, automation and infrastructure monitoring.
  • Ability to work collaboratively, share knowledge and adapt to new technologies and changing business requirements.
  • Experience with Kubernetes, monitoring platforms, networking, cloud technologies or telecommunications/ISP environments would be advantageous.
