We are Hiring: Service Accountant

Location: London Borough of Hackney
Contract: Temporary
Rate: £296.83/day
IR35: Inside IR35

Role Overview

London Borough of Hackney is seeking an experienced Service Accountant to provide proactive financial support and advice to service areas. The role will focus on budget setting, budget monitoring, accounts closure, financial risk management and management accounting across revenue and capital budgets.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead budget setting, monitoring and year-end accounts closure activities.
  • Provide financial advice, challenge and support to budget holders and senior managers.
  • Monitor budgets, identify emerging financial risks and recommend corrective actions.
  • Ensure compliance with local government financial regulations, controls and procedures.
  • Prepare accurate financial information for reporting, FOI requests and statutory returns.
  • Support financial projects and efficiency programmes.
  • Build effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Deputise for the Group Accountant when required.
  • Supervise, coach and develop Accountancy Assistants.

Essential Requirements

  • Strong management accounting experience within a customer-focused environment.
  • Experience managing revenue and capital budgets, including budget setting, monitoring and closure.
  • Experience working closely with budget holders and senior stakeholders.
  • Good understanding of local government finance and services.
  • Advanced Excel/spreadsheet skills.
  • Strong financial analysis, risk assessment and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities.
  • Fully qualified AAT or part-qualified CCAB, or equivalent relevant accounting experience.
  • Ability to work independently and identify issues requiring escalation.
