Job title: Service Designer (Contract) – Inside IR35
Location: Remote (UK)
Employment type: Contract, 12 months initially
About the role
We are recruiting Service Designers for a leading defence prime. This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced Service Designer to lead the design of end-to-end services supporting some of the UK's most critical missions. You'll bring human-centred, evidence-based design leadership to a multi-disciplinary delivery team, shaping services across the full lifecycle — from Discovery through to Live.
Working in an agile, innovative and team-centric environment, you'll provide expert professional advice, influence decision-making, and lead complex design work that transforms how users interact with services and how those services operate behind the scenes.
This role follows a blended hybrid working model — mainly remote.
What you'll do
- Lead service design activities across Discovery, Alpha, Beta and Live
- Produce service maps, journeys, blueprints and end-to-end service models
- Work collaboratively across multi-disciplinary teams to align user needs, business goals and technology constraints
- Provide professional advice on service design approaches, risks and opportunities
- Coordinate service design work to time, quality and business expectations
- Facilitate workshops, co-design sessions and decision-making forums
- Support the development of service design practice and mentor junior team members

What you'll bring
- Strong expertise across the DDaT service design lifecycle
- Ability to influence decisions with evidence, research and clear rationale
- Experience delivering complex service design in multi-disciplinary teams
- Strong communication skills and confidence in simplifying complexity
- Ability to contribute to planning, strategy and roadmap discussions
- Experience coaching or supporting others in service design

Core requirements (must have)
- Proven experience in end-to-end service design (DDaT)
- Ability to produce service artefacts at multiple levels — journeys through to ecosystems
- Skilled in evidence-based design: insight synthesis, problem framing, prioritisation
- Ability to influence stakeholders across engineering, product and policy domains
- Experience coordinating service design delivery across phases and teams
Desirable
- Exposure to operational service management (ITIL, SLAs, support models)
- Experience in defence, government or regulated environments
- Working knowledge of adjacent roles (UR, BA, Product, Interaction Design)
- Experience in agile or SAFe delivery environments
- Professional training or accreditation in service design or human-centred design
- Contribution to communities of practice or internal capability uplift
