Service Director - Planning & Transport

North East England | Hybrid Working
£700 - £1,000 per day
Interim Position

An exciting interim opportunity has arisen for an experienced Service Director - Planning & Transport to join a large and ambitious local authority in the North East.

This is a key leadership role, responsible for shaping and delivering strategic planning, transport, infrastructure, environmental, and climate change services that support sustainable growth, housing delivery, and economic development across the region.

Key Responsibilities of the Service Director of Planning and Transport:

  • Lead the delivery of planning, transport, engineering, climate change, environmental, and regulatory services.
  • Provide strategic leadership on major housing, infrastructure, and economic growth programmes.
  • Manage significant capital programmes and oversee the delivery of long-term planning and transport strategies.
  • Act as a trusted advisor to elected members, senior stakeholders, and regional partners.
  • Drive organizational change, service improvement, and partnership development across a diverse portfolio of functions.

The Successful Service Director of Planning and Transport will have:

  • A relevant professional qualification.
  • Extensive experience within planning, transport, infrastructure, place, regeneration, or environmental services.
  • A strong background in local government leadership.
  • Significant budget and programme management experience.
  • Excellent stakeholder management, influencing, and negotiation skills.
  • Experience working with elected members, regional partnerships, and government bodies.
