Service Locator

Service Locator – Permanent Role | Devonport Dockyard, Plymouth

About the Role

KierBAM is a Joint Venture (JV) partnership between Kier and BAM UK & Ireland, working on the redevelopment of a Royal Navy site in Plymouth, Devonport Dockyard.

We are seeking an experienced Service Locator to identify underground utilities using geophysical techniques, mark services on-site for safety and compliance, and ensure adherence to permits within a high-security military environment.

Key Responsibilities

Your role requires a multi-tasking approach to:

  • Conduct physical checks and surveys of underground services using:
    • Electromagnetic location
    • Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR)
  • Accurately mark and spray-paint services in adherence to colour standards (identifying type and depth).
  • Maintain permitted processes, including:
    • Arming, reviewing, and approving Permits to Break Surface.
    • Enforcing compliance with method statements and panel ground jumbos.
    • Providing briefings adhering to 8-point checklists.
    • Managing drawings, permit signatures, and BOSC discrepancies.
  • Work within an active military facility, ensuring:
    • Workforce safety & regulatory compliance.
    • Secure archiving of services via CAD drawings and updates.
    • Ongoing monitoring of service markings during excavations.

Responsibilities may also evolve to encompass additional tasks as required, with training provided where necessary.

About Your Team

KierBAM (JV) aims to create a collaborative environment, integrating Kier's BAM operations for exceptional infrastructure projects. As a Service Locator, you'll support:

  • Contract compliance in a high-risk, high-accessibility naval zone.
  • Operational efficiency through accurate utility detection and permit processes.

Location: Devonport Dockyard, Plymouth. Work arrangement: Permanent, 42.5-hour weekday.

What You’ll Bring to the Role

Essential Requirements

  • MT (CSCS Card) Before Start Mandatory construction safety certification required.
  • Geophysical Proficiency Skilled in **Electromagnetic locating **& Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR).
  • Industry & technician expertise Working knowledge of:
    • PAS 128,
    • GS 6 (utility detection standards),
    • TSA (Technical Specification for Underground Assets), and
    • HSG 47 ( excavation reliance protocol)
  • Technical Gear Experienced using Cable and Armour (CAT) requirements plus Genny lease tools.
  • Team Collaboration Can communicate effectively with techs, site supervisors, and clients.

Desirable

  • Reduced Made Safe (Nuclear) Experience
  • QCF-level certificates (preferred: Level 3 or 5 in Utility Mapping)
  • 2-3+ years of terrain-penetrating data collection experience

Security Restrictions

To ensure clearances, only candidates with:

  • EU/NATO/5 Eyes/MISWG member passports; UK residency for ≥5 years. Note: Clearances take 8 weeks - apply early.
