Entry-Level Service and Maintenance of Specialist Gas Systems

This is an entry-level position for individuals beginning a career in the service and maintenance of specialist gas systems. You will work alongside experienced engineers and technicians on planned preventative maintenance visits and reactive callouts, gaining practical hands-on experience while completing a recognised apprenticeship.

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

  • Accompany and assist experienced engineers and technicians on service, maintenance, and inspection visits across all sectors
  • Begin developing practical knowledge of medical gas pipeline systems (MGPS), process gas, compressed air, vacuum, and specialist gas systems
  • Assist with routine inspection, testing, and servicing of compressed air plant, vacuum plant, gas generation systems (e.g. nitrogen generators), and VIEs under supervision
  • Support servicing and inspection activities on medical gas area alarm panels, gas detection systems, and gas control equipment under close guidance
  • Assist with the completion of service records, inspection reports, and job documentation under guidance
  • Learn and apply relevant health & safety requirements, permit-to-work systems, and RGE procedures at all times
  • Attend and actively participate in toolbox talks, safety briefings, and structured training sessions
  • Start building awareness of relevant standards and codes of practice including HTM 02-01, BCGA Codes of Practice, SEMI Standards, and EIGA guidelines
  • Develop basic familiarity with gas system components including pipework, valves, outlets, alarms, and control equipment
  • Maintain a professional approach on all client sites at all times
  • Represent RGE positively with clients, building relationships from an early stage

What you'll learn

  • Apply health, safety, and environmental procedures in compliance with regulations, standards, and guidance. For example, signage and barriers, working at height, confined spaces, and COSHH.
  • Follow security procedures. For example, site access, document classification, and securing assets.
  • Follow emergency incident and response procedures.
  • Apply sustainability principles. For example, minimising waste.
  • Segregate items for reuse, recycling, and waste.
  • Use mathematical principles and formulae to support engineering maintenance.
  • Apply engineering maintenance standards and procedures.
  • Apply foreign material exclusion procedures.
  • Follow maintenance tools and equipment control procedures. For example, handling and storage.
  • Reinstate the work area.
  • Apply team working principles.
  • Communicate with others to give and receive information. For example, colleagues, customers, and stakeholders.

You will attend Hopwood Hall College one day per week on your designated day-release day. You will also be assigned a tutor who will visit your workplace regularly to carry out progress reviews and support your development throughout the apprenticeship.

Essential qualifications

  • GCSE in:
    • English (grade Grade 4/C or above)
    • Maths (grade Grade 4/C or above)
