Service Technician (Sainsbury’s Distribution Centre) – A Division of Vanderlande and Toyota Automated Logistics


About the Role

Your role: As a Service Technician at our Sainsbury’s Distribution Centre, you’ll maintain critical logistics infrastructure to guarantee productivity, equipment reliability, health & safety compliance, and superior operational quality. Your expertise will directly affect the output and continuity of one of the UK’s largest retail supply chains.


Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain top operational condition of all automated systems and installations.
  • Diagnose, repair, and rectify mechanical, electrical, and control faults across conveyor systems, sortation equipment, and automated storage/retrieval systems.
    • Perform malfunction troubleshooting, emergency repairs, and planned preventive maintenance (PM).
    • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to execute preventive, periodic, and corrective maintenance programs.
  • Ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations, including DSE/FME risk assessments and orde Sequelize (ERP system) integration.
  • Assist in improvement initiatives, such as:
    • Implementing predictive maintenance software for early fault detection.
    • Optimising maintenance schedules to minimise downtime.
  • Train or coach junior technicians (as needed).
  • Contribute to project-based solutions for continuous efficiencies in high-volume environments.

About You

Eligibility & Requirements

You must meet essential criteria to thrive in this role:

  • Certified City & Guilds NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent above) in:

    • Mechanical maintenance
    • Electrical systems
    • Instrumentation/control technology
  • Technical-familiarity with:

    • Automated warehousing, conveyor technology, or process automation.
    • Mechanical processes (assets, drives, transmissions, pneumatic/hydraulic systems).
    • Electrical circuits (low-voltage, motor control, relays, PLCs).
    • Control systems (programmable logic controllers, sensors, vision systems).

  • Shifts-ready attitude: Willing to work flexible hours, including overnights, weekends, and bank holidays—shoulder seasons inevitably demand after-hour support.
  • Experience with maintenance planning tools or systems (e.g., SAP, DSE, or facility management software).
  • Commitment to health & safety compliance: adherence to Vanderlande’s HSE standards, including PPE usage, manual handling policies, and risk assessments.

Nice to Haves (Additional Assets)

While not mandatory, the following will strengthen your profile:

  • Vetted experience in high-volume FMCG (Fast-Moving Consumer Goods) manufacturing environments.
  • Proven experience in training/coaching technicians or junior operatives.
  • Hands-on knowledge of Toyota Production System principles or lean maintenance methodologies.
