Setting Out Engineer
This challenging and exciting opportunity requires an individual with a good level of qualification, coupled with at least 1-3 years relevant setting out experience from the civil engineering, construction, infrastructure or groundworks sectors. Attendance on site is required, so a full UK driving licence, all required certifications (CSCS etc) and the willingness to travel is essential.
Due to continued expansion, an abundant pipeline of works, and the recent award of a number of long-term major contracts, our client is now looking to appoint individuals who will be responsible for leading and managing all setting out aspects of various projects. The position will provide support to the engineering, project and site management teams to enable accurate setting out, accurate quantities of materials and plant required, quality checking and control of sub-contractors and timely site mobilisation.
Typical Duties
- Verify the accuracy of survey data including measurements and calculations on site
- Calculate heights, depths, relative positions, lines, and other characteristics of terrain to produce accurate volumetric information
- Prepare or supervise preparation of all data, charts, plots, maps, records, and documents related to setting out
- Take measurements and accumulate data to determine levels, positions and elevations
- Determine longitudes and latitudes of important features and boundaries in areas using instruments such as Leica, LSS, Total Station, theodolites, transits, levels, and GPS systems
- Liaise and coordinate with the engineering and project teams, and any other stakeholders
- Establish fixed points using appropriate equipment and instruments
- Plan and conduct setting out designed to establish baselines, elevations and other measurements
- Analyse data and specifications to prepare necessary reports which enable accurate setting out, accurate quantities of materials and plant required, and timely site mobilisation

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
