Purpose of the Role

To provide professional Safety, Health, Environmental, and Sustainability support across M. O’Brien Plant Hire operations, ensuring compliance, reducing risk, and driving continuous improvement in SHES performance.

Reporting to senior management, you will work closely with operational teams across depots, workshops, transport, and site-based activities to promote best practice and ensure SHES standards are implemented effectively.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct regular site, depot, workshop, and yard inspections to ensure compliance with company procedures and legislation.
  • Carry out audits and monitoring activities, identifying areas for improvement and supporting corrective actions.
  • Support the investigation of accidents, incidents, near misses, and environmental events, ensuring lessons learned are communicated effectively.
  • Produce reports, risk assessments, method statements, and safety documentation as required.
  • Assist managers and supervisors in completing operational risk assessments and safe systems of work.
  • Deliver toolbox talks, safety briefings, inductions, and workforce engagement initiatives.
  • Promote a positive safety culture across all areas of the business.
  • Monitor compliance with company policies, health and safety legislation, environmental requirements, and industry best practices.
  • Support environmental management activities, including waste management, pollution prevention, and sustainability initiatives.
  • Maintain accurate SHES records and ensure compliance documentation is up to date.
  • Liaise with customers, contractors, regulatory authorities, and other stakeholders when required.
  • Provide practical advice and coaching to managers, supervisors, drivers, fitters, and operational personnel.
  • Assist with external audits, accreditations, and industry compliance schemes.
  • Support the development and implementation of continuous improvement initiatives across the business.

What We'll Be Looking For

Essential:

  • Previous experience in a Health & Safety, SHES, or HSEQ role within construction, plant hire, transport, rail, or civil engineering.
  • NEBOSH General Certificate.
  • Strong understanding of UK Health & Safety legislation.
  • Experience carrying out site inspections, audits, and incident investigations.
  • Excellent communication and report-writing skills.
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to influence and engage employees at all levels.
  • Full UK Driving Licence.

Desirable:

  • NEBOSH Construction Certificate.
  • Membership of IOSH.
  • Knowledge of plant hire, transport, workshop, or heavy construction operations.
  • Experience with ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 management systems.
