Shift Engineer
📍 London – Onsite
💰 £50,500 + £5,000 Shift Allowance + Benefits
This Shift Engineer position is based in London and offers a salary of £50,500 plus a £5,000 shift allowance and benefits. The role is with a well-established facilities management organisation, supporting the engineering team at a prestigious, high-profile site.
This is a fully onsite, shift-based position and would suit an experienced Shift Engineer with a strong mechanical engineering background and previous experience within commercial building services or facilities management. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering planned and reactive maintenance across mechanical building services, including HVAC systems, pumps, motors, pipework and associated plant. You’ll also carry out fault-finding, routine inspections and first-line response to engineering issues, while coordinating contractors and supporting small works and improvement projects.
What You'll Be Doing
- Delivering planned and reactive maintenance across a wide range of mechanical building services.
- Responding to engineering faults and breakdowns during your shift, diagnosing issues and implementing effective solutions to minimise downtime.
- Monitoring the performance and condition of plant and equipment, identifying potential faults and opportunities to improve reliability and efficiency.
- Carrying out routine inspections and checks to ensure mechanical assets remain compliant, safe and fully operational.
- Operating and monitoring HVAC systems, pumps, motors, pipework and associated mechanical plant.
- Coordinating and supervising specialist contractors to ensure maintenance and repair activities are completed safely and to a high standard.
- Supporting the planning and delivery of preventative maintenance activities while minimising disruption to building occupants.
- Maintaining accurate service records, shift logs, maintenance records and compliance documentation.
- Completing effective shift handovers, ensuring outstanding issues, faults and engineering activities are clearly communicated to the incoming team.
- Working closely with facilities teams, fellow engineers and client stakeholders to provide technical support and engineering expertise.
- Assisting with small works, upgrades and improvement projects across the site.
- Ensuring all engineering activities are completed in accordance with company procedures, site requirements and health & safety legislation.
- Supporting colleagues across the engineering team and contributing to a positive, collaborative shift environment.

What We're Looking For
- Previous experience working as a Shift Engineer, Mechanical Engineer or Building Services Engineer within a commercial or facilities management environment.
- A recognised mechanical qualification such as City & Guilds, NVQ, apprenticeship or equivalent.
- Strong knowledge of HVAC systems, pumps, motors, pipework and associated mechanical plant.
- Experience diagnosing and repairing mechanical faults across a variety of building systems.
- Experience carrying out planned preventative and reactive maintenance.
- The ability to respond effectively to breakdowns and engineering issues within a critical or high-profile building environment.
- Confidence working alongside contractors, suppliers, facilities teams and other engineering disciplines.
- A solid understanding of planned preventative maintenance principles.
- Good working knowledge of health & safety regulations and safe working practices.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to provide clear, accurate shift handovers and maintenance records.
- A reliable and professional approach, with the ability to work effectively as part of a shift engineering team.
