What you will do:

As a Shift Engineer, you will provide specialist Process Control & Automation (PC&A) support to maintain and enhance manufacturing assets, ensuring plant availability, reliability, and performance objectives are achieved. Acting as the senior engineering representative on shift, you will diagnose complex equipment faults, lead continuous improvement initiatives, oversee engineering activities, and ensure compliance with all health, safety, environmental, and statutory requirements. You will work closely with operations, maintenance teams, and contractors to optimise plant performance, support project delivery, and drive engineering excellence across the site.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical expertise to diagnose and resolve complex faults within manufacturing process equipment.
  • Maintain and develop Level 0-3 automation systems, including PLC, SCADA, instrumentation, data acquisition, and CCTV systems.
  • Ensure PC&A maintenance activities are completed safely, on time, and to required engineering standards.
  • Manage and maintain quality, environmental, and safety-critical instrumentation and control systems, ensuring compliance with legislation and company standards.
  • Lead and support continuous improvement, root cause analysis, and failure reduction activities to improve plant reliability and performance.
  • Act as lead engineer for minor automation and control projects and support engineering planning activities.
  • Supervise engineering personnel and contractors, ensuring safe working practices and high professional standards.
  • Manage planned and reactive maintenance work through SAP, ensuring work completion and backlog control.
  • Support compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements including COMAH, PUWER, DSEAR, LOLER, HAVS, Process Safety, and Management of Change (MOC).
  • Authorise and issue safety permits as required and promote a strong safety culture through audits and compliance activities.
  • Work collaboratively with Shift Managers, Senior Operators, and day-based engineering teams to optimise plant operations and share best practice.
  • Manage QA equipment, calibration activities, spare parts processes, and site radiation sources in accordance with business and legislative requirements.
  • Fulfil designated responsibilities during site emergencies, incidents, or major operational events.
  • Identify and implement innovative technologies and engineering solutions to support operational excellence.

What you will need:

We’re looking for a proactive and technically capable engineer with a qualification in a relevant engineering discipline, ideally educated to degree level or holding an HNC/HND with significant industrial experience. You will be a confident decision-maker, capable of taking ownership of through-plant issues, leading engineering activities on shift, and understanding the wider operational impact of your decisions. Previous supervisory experience would be advantageous, along with a strong commitment to safety, reliability, and continuous improvement.

Essential & Desirable Requirements

  • Degree, HNC or HND in a relevant Engineering discipline, supported by practical industrial experience.
  • Ability to make informed engineering decisions and take ownership of plant performance issues.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to assess the impact of decisions across shifts and operational teams.
  • Previous supervisory or team leadership experience is desirable.
  • Experience using SAP for maintenance management, including work orders, notifications, spare parts, and maintenance planning.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and P&ID drawings.
  • Understanding of industrial networks, IP addressing, subnets, and network topologies.
  • Knowledge of quality management systems and ISO 9001 standards.
  • Awareness of environmental management principles and ISO 14001 requirements.
  • Experience or knowledge of process safety systems and legislation, including COMAH, HAZOP, LOPA, and SIF/SIL methodologies.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively across engineering and operational teams.
