Shift Lead - nights (Temporary, fixed term for 6 months)
Reporting to: Manufacturing Manager
Location: Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk
Hours: 38 hours per week (Monday to Thursday, 20.45 – 06.15)
The Opportunity
Responsible for the operation of Operations supporting the Production Manager with the day-to-day management of the Shift Team, overseeing operation, ensuring a safe and an efficient operation in achieving business targets. This role is part of the working team but key in directing the team and a point of contact for the shift team.

What you’ll be doing
The responsibilities of this role include but are not limited to:
Strategy & Planning
- Operate to the Company’s Environment, Health, Safety, Security and Quality Standards.
- Report accurately and effectively on the daily progress of production including any delays and their causes to the Production Manager, so that adequate decisions can be made to minimize effects on customer deliveries, production efficiency and future production planning. Advise on manning levels and the scheduling of production tasks and any issues which may impact production timelines.
- Communicate with all stakeholders to ensure the plan is followed and in line with achieving the weekly plan On Time in Full (OTIF).
Operational Management
- Lead a ‘right first time’ policy and help to ensure that all orders are met on time and within specification.
- Accuracy of stock movement and closing of Works orders and good inventory control.
- Ensure 100% Plan vs Actual & operators are fully utilised.
- Oversee and provide support to the distillation process and Control Panel Operator (CPO).
- Organising & Preparing workloads for every operator and ensure minimum 95% labour (Done on Dayshift take out) utilisation and ensuring gaps are addressed through root cause analysis.
- Ensure process controls are followed and all documented and all downtime is captured.
- Complete a comprehensive written shift report and verbally hand over to ensure safe, efficient running of all processes.
- Execute & Lead all Toolbox Talks based on any Continuous Improvement activities within the factory.
- Ensure 5 S schedule in place and high standards of housekeeping and 5S are maintained within the department.
- Coordinate the safe start-up and shutdown of all equipment and ancillary equipment within department.
- Controlling stock and ensuring accuracy of stock in production areas. Facilitate stock checks as agreed.
- To support delivery and deployment of a lean culture and behavior in the organization. Contribute to a ‘Continuous Improvement’ process to improve, optimise and make safer processes and operations. Lead a ‘Continuous Improvement’ process within shift to improve, optimise and make safer processes and operations. Review and seek to improve labour and equipment efficiencies in conjunction with the Production Manager.
- Maintain high standards of GMP & BRC compliance in all aspects of production and closing off GMP and Daily walk-through actions.
- Exhibit a good awareness of safe working practices risk assessment, HACCP and general process safety and ensure this is communicated to all staff. Take the lead in introducing an excellent safety culture in general and specifically manual handling, Vehicle / Pedestrian safety, PPE and Accident / incident reporting.
- Checking goods and paperwork to ensure that we achieve right first time across the site and paperwork is filled in properly.
- Ensure all Cleaning schedules are followed, and all checklist related to environmental and machine cleaning are done.
- Carry out internal investigations into CAPA’s / Complaints and Non-conformance’s. Ensure corrective and preventative actions are in place and deadlines are met, with evidence to support solutions.
- Understand the Distillation processes, enabling you to make informed decisions alongside Control Panel Operators. Ability to interpret process instructions to populate Distillation Cuts for N items list and printing of correct labels; Start, Comp / pot and fractions. Print WD paperwork inline with planning schedules.
- Monitor and manage the requirements of the Skyliner utilities – ensure checklists are completed daily / weekly and areas of responsibility are maintained to allow full functionality.

People
- Monitoring team performance and working with HR and Production Manager to address poor performance, supported by the Production Manager where required.
- Attend Regular 121’s with all Manufacturing staff, this is documented as well as any other communication.
- Responsible for Warehouse operators on night shift performance and administration.
- Prepare and communicate performance reviews to members of the manufacturing teams. Ensure reviews are accurate with data driven evidence to support scoring system inline with managers tool kit.
- Co-ordinate with Production Manager that minimum staffing levels are maintained. Capture all leave and ensure Holiday rules are adhered to and there is sufficient cover across all shifts for critical tasks.
- Co-ordinate training for staff in all aspects of the Manufacturing Operators role.
- Implementation of training plan and ensure operators have a programme which addresses competency assessment and training gaps identified through the process.
- Ensure SOP’s and process cleaning procedures are relevant and up to date. Make small changes if required and report major deviations to Manager. Ensure all the operators are operating safety and all the Safety Critical Tasks are trained and Training records up to date.
- To ensure that Toolbox Talks and Risk Assessment, together with any Safety Bulletins issued, are carried out in line with the required schedule.
- To promote the right employee behaviour and conduct of employees through coaching and mentoring. Provide day to day leadership, guidance and support for the team, creating an open and inclusive environment. Encourage teamwork and contribute to increasing morale through involvement, training and recognition. Conduct annual appraisals for the team.

Health, Safety & Environment
- Maintain site security out of hours and ensure that all buildings are locked, alarmed and any problems reported through the Asset Care Department.
- Accident and Incident investigation and ensure report is written to both the Production Manager.
- Contribute to a good approach to Food Hygiene, HACCP and Quality and ensure all relevant regulations are met.
- Contribute to an excellent safety culture in general and specifically about manual handling, Vehicle / Pedestrian safety, PPE and Accident / incident reporting.

- Proven leadership experience.
- An understanding of BRC and Customer Quality Standards.
- Knowledge of working within a LEAN environment.
- Be competent in computer operation and produce reports, use email and enter data as required (including the use of JDE system).
- Proven Production experience which demonstrates the ability to deliver a production plan effectively.
