Salary: £68,402.40 per annum
Safety Critical Role
We keep the railway moving 24/7, expected shifts would be days, nights, weekend working.
Keeping trains moving safely and on time takes more than engineering know-how – it takes clear leadership, smart decisions, and a team that trusts you to guide them through every shift.
As a Shift Production Manager within Northern’s Engineering team, you will lead the safe and efficient delivery of maintenance, servicing, and train presentation activities. You will be responsible for the performance of the shift. It’s a hands-on leadership role where you set the tone, keep things on track, and make sure every shift delivers what the network needs.

- Setting clear standards and expectations from day one
- Leading the behaviours that create a safe, professional, and high-performing team
- Embedding safety, quality, and continuous improvement into everything we do
- Supporting the development of a ‘people first’ environment where everyone can thrive

- Lead TCC operations during shifts by delivering the production plan, adjusting schedules for unforeseen events
- Provide clear leadership to TCC teams, coaching, developing, and supporting colleagues, managing competence, and ensuring succession planning
- Oversee planning, vehicle movements, resource availability, and use of engineering systems to meet workload plans, strategic goals, and service delivery requirements
- Handling day-to-day operational challenges, making decisions that keep the depot moving
- Building effective relationships with internal teams and third-party partners
- Taking responsibility for incidents, investigations, and continuous improvement

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
