INTERNAL VACANCY
We are pleased to invite internal applications for a new Shift Technician development opportunity based at Airbus, Broughton.
This role offers a structured pathway for someone who wishes to develop their technical knowledge and progress from fundamental maintenance activities into advanced fault-finding and system diagnostics.
Applicants are not expected to possess all the advanced technical skills from the outset. We are looking for someone with a strong electrical maintenance foundation, a logical approach to problem-solving and a genuine desire to learn and develop.
The successful candidate will work closely with the Technical Support Team and, over an 18-month period, receive training and practical exposure across:
- Electrical fault-finding on crane systems
- Reading and interpreting electrical drawings and schematics
- PLC systems and software
- Inverters and variable-frequency drives
- Technical reporting and accurate data logging
- Software backups and version control
- Networking, HMIs, sensors and peripheral equipment
- Advanced system diagnostics
The role will act as an important link between the shift team and the Technical Support Team, helping the business to identify faults, recurring issues and opportunities for future improvement.

- A strong interest in electrical systems and technical fault-finding
- A logical and methodical approach, particularly when working under pressure
- Excellent attention to detail
- A commitment to completing work safely and accurately
- Good communication and handover skills
- Confidence using Microsoft Windows and other computer-based systems
- A willingness to undertake training and apply new learning in the workplace
- The ability to work proactively and take ownership of their development
- A consistent “right first time” approach to safety, reporting and data management
Experience of PLCs, inverters, crane electrical systems, Ultimo or MRi/Concept would be beneficial, but full competence in these areas is not required at the point of application.
The Programme
The programme will be delivered across three stages:
Months 0–6: Foundation and Trust
The initial focus will be on safety, documentation, electrical fault-finding, logical problem-solving, electrical drawing interpretation and basic connectivity.
Months 6–12: Competency and Diagnostics
The successful applicant will begin undertaking independent software backups, interrogating PLC systems, interpreting inverter parameters and diagnosing faults using structured fault-finding techniques.
Months 12–18: Technical Ownership
The final stage will focus on greater autonomy, advanced networking, complex multi-system faults and providing high-quality technical handovers.

Progression between each stage will be based on demonstrated competence and will not be automatic. The successful applicant will need to show that they can perform the fundamental elements of the role safely, accurately and consistently before progressing to more advanced training and technical responsibilities.
Training
The development programme is expected to include a combination of internal and external training, including:
- Electrical fault-finding and logical problem-solving
- Electrical drawing interpretation
- PLC and inverter training
- Siemens basic training
- SWF electrical and service authorisation training
- LEEA Foundation
- Relevant Granada and Airbus mandatory training
