Job Overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a 12 month Secondment as a Sister/ Charge Nurse on Gate 34a/b.
Gate 34a/b is part of the NMSK division at the Bristol NHS Foundation Trust and specialises in Hyperacute and acute stroke and Neurology.
This is a busy unit that cares for patients who have had a stroke, from the South West region.
As a Sister, you will lead the nursing team in the delivery of evidence based patient centred care, which is of high standard. You will work in partnership with the Senior Sister and ward team in developing the team and provision of the service, forming working relationships with the surgical teams and wider MDT that contribute to care of our patients. You will be involved in the co-ordination of the ward, patient flow, completion of audits and mentoring and supporting of junior staff. You will also be a key member in facilitating changes in needs of the service and play a vital role in the development of the ward team including their ongoing development.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will work closely with and provide clinical and managerial support for the SWS and wider team.
- Will take charge of the ward as and when required in the absence of the WM on a daily basis.
- Will be expected to lead on an area of ward quality and working with the SWS and other Band 6’ ensure the ward submits all quality and Infection control audits monthly and that the results are reviewed and acted upon to ensure continuous improvement.
- Will be responsible for managing the ward team in relation to the assessment, planning, provision, maintenance, and evaluation of programmes of high standards of evidence based, individualised, holistic, patient care.
- Will assist the SWS in provision of high-quality patient care within the constraints of the allocated ward budget.
- In the absence of the SWS, Will be responsible for ensuring that care delivery by all members of the care team is carried out in accordance with Trust policies and procedures and the guidelines for practice set by the NMC code of conduct.
- Will take responsibility for the management, supervision and guidance of other qualified staff, Health care assistants or students on a daily basis.
- Will be responsible for the provision of an effective learning environment within the clinical area in support of the ward Sister.
- Will take personal responsibility and accountability for ensuring that the Trust policies and procedures are known and followed by all members of the care team in the absence of the SWS.

- The post holder will regularly take responsibility for management of the ward area, that will include carrying the Directorate Bleep on occasion
- The post holder will take responsibility for providing reports and duty rosters as agreed with the Ward Senior Sister. In partnership with the Ward Senior Sister will monitor skill mix and staffing on a regular basis to allow provision of a high standard of care within the allocated budget for the area.
- The post holder will regularly act as a mentor and assessor for student nurses at all levels and new staff of all grades. Will be responsible for the support and guidance of other trained staff acting as mentors in their ward / department. This includes the coordination of learning opportunities and as agreed with the Ward Senior Sister, the development of appropriate teaching programmes and provision of relevant educational material/ literature for use in the ward area.
- In the absence of the Ward Senior Sister, lead, and coordinate teams of nursing staff in the delivery of high standards of evidence-based nursing care.
- To be responsible for ensuring the appropriate assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of evidence-based care to all patients in the clinical area.
- Responsible to participate, supervise and coordinate delivery of required planned, direct patient care to a high standard, in accordance with Trust policies and procedures and conforming to the guidelines set out in the NMC code of professional conduct.
- To act efficiently and effectively upon any significant changes in a patient’s condition or circumstances.
- Responsible for taking charge of the ward / department daily in the absence of the Ward Senior Sister.
- To contribute towards health promotion for patients and carers by providing education, support, and advice. Ensure referral to appropriate professionals or agencies as required.
- Ensure the safe ordering, administration, and custody of patients’ medication according to Trust policies and procedures.
- To be responsible for delegation of appropriate work to other qualified staff, health care assistants and students and to supervise them and participate with them in the delivery of patient care.
