I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Importantly, this is not a traditional setting-out focused Site Engineer position. The contractor is looking for someone who is comfortable with the practical engineering aspects of site delivery, including checking levels, lines, and dimensions, but who can also bring broader engineering knowledge, technical judgement, and quality experience to the role.
Projects are typically delivered across sectors including Education, Healthcare, Industrial, Commercial, and Leisure, with values generally up to £20m. Experience working on complex schemes, particularly those involving live services or challenging site conditions, would be highly relevant.
The Role
- Provide technical engineering support across live construction projects.
- Manage and coordinate temporary works requirements.
- Ensure works are delivered in accordance with design criteria, specifications, and client requirements.
- Carry out quality assurance and quality control inspections and checks.
- Manage ITPs, inspections, testing, and associated quality documentation.
- Identify, record, and manage non-conformances through to resolution.
- Support subcontractors and site teams with technical queries and engineering issues.
- Work closely with designers and consultants to resolve technical queries and design issues.
- Interpret drawings, specifications, and technical information and communicate requirements effectively to site teams.
- Support wider project and pre-construction activities where required.
