Are you an ambitious Site Engineer looking to work on one of the UK's most prestigious coastal infrastructure projects? VolkerStevin is seeking a motivated and talented Site Engineer to join our award-winning team on the Southsea Coastal Defence Scheme, a flagship project within our Environment Agency Framework. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a nationally significant scheme that will help protect communities for generations to come, while developing your career with one of the UK's leading civil engineering contractors.
The Role
As Site Engineer, you will play a key role in the successful delivery of construction activities across your section of the works. You'll be responsible for engineering controls, quality assurance, health and safety, programme delivery, and supporting junior engineers, ensuring works are delivered safely, accurately, and efficiently.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering & Construction
- Lead all setting out and dimensional control activities.
- Ensure accurate surveying, engineering controls, and maintenance of project control points.
- Support temporary works planning and implementation.
- Provide technical guidance to site teams and subcontractors.
Quality
- Produce and implement Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs).
- Raise and manage RFIs, Technical Queries (TQs), and Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs).
- Maintain accurate records including as-built information, site diaries, and quality documentation.
- Drive high standards of workmanship and compliance across your section of works.
Health, Safety & Environment
- Champion a positive safety culture and support our Safety Ripple programme.
- Contribute to RAMS, risk assessments, COSHH assessments, and task briefings.
- Ensure safe systems of work are followed and all required permits are in place.
- Undertake duties including Temporary Works Supervisor and Existing Services Coordinator where required.
- Support safety inspections, planning meetings, and incident reporting.

Commercial & Programme
- Measure completed works and maintain accurate project records.
- Assist with material management and wastage control.
- Identify risks, delays, Early Warnings, and opportunities for improvement.
- Support short and medium-term planning and monitor subcontractor performance.
- Help ensure works are delivered in line with programme requirements.
Leadership & Teamwork
- Support, mentor, and develop junior engineers.
- Coordinate subcontractors and site activities.
- Build strong relationships with clients, designers, suppliers, and stakeholders.
- Promote collaboration and a high-performance team culture.
About You
We're looking for someone with:
- Experience as a Site Engineer within civil engineering, marine, infrastructure, water, or environmental projects.
- Strong setting out and surveying capabilities.
- Knowledge of quality, health & safety, and construction best practice.
- Excellent communication and organisational skills.
- A proactive attitude and desire to develop their career.
- Experience managing subcontractors and delivering sections of work is advantageous.

About You
- Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering.
- Proven experience delivering civil engineering projects, with approximately 5 years' experience gained within infrastructure, water, marine, environmental, or major construction schemes.
- Working towards a relevant professional qualification (such as ICE Incorporated or Chartered Engineer status).
- Strong setting out and surveying capabilities.
- Knowledge of quality, health & safety, and construction best practice.
- Excellent communication and organisational skills.
- A proactive attitude and desire to develop their career.
- Experience managing subcontractors and delivering sections of work is advantageous.
