The Netherton Hub is a major new energy infrastructure development located near Peterhead in Aberdeenshire, forming a key part of SSEN Transmission’s multi‑billion‑pound Accelerated Strategic Transmission Investment (ASTI) programme and its wider Pathway to 2030 upgrade of the Scottish transmission network.
Designed to strengthen the UK’s ability to transport renewable electricity from the north of Scotland to high‑demand centres nationwide, the hub will incorporate a new High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) converter station, a 400 kV substation, a 132 kV substation, and associated operational facilities. Once complete, it will enable efficient long‑distance transmission of offshore and onshore renewable energy, supporting both UK and Scottish Government net‑zero targets while delivering significant economic benefits, job creation, and local supply‑chain opportunities.

What you'll be doing
- Ensure all works are delivered safely and in accordance with Balfour Beatty and SSEN health, safety and environmental requirements.
- Manage and supervise day-to-day site activities across earthworks, drainage, roads, ducting, foundations and utility installations.
- Set out works accurately in accordance with approved drawings, specifications and project tolerances.
- Conduct site surveys and maintain survey control points throughout construction.
- Review construction drawings and technical information, identifying and resolving engineering issues before works commence.
- Produce and maintain quality records, inspection test plans (ITPs), check sheets and as-built documentation.
- Monitor subcontractor performance to ensure compliance with programme, quality and safety requirements.
- Coordinate interfaces between civil, HVDC, substation, cable and building work packages.
- Manage permits, temporary works requirements and engineering compliance on site.
- Assist with short-term planning and ensure work activities are delivered in line with the project programme.
- Identify and implement productivity improvements and value engineering opportunities.
- Maintain accurate daily records, site diaries and progress reports.
- Support commercial teams through measurement of completed works and validation of subcontractor claims.
- Ensure environmental controls are implemented, particularly regarding drainage, water management, protected species and ecological constraints.
- Participate in site inspections, audits and client progress meetings.
- Raise and close out NCRs, defects and quality issues in a timely manner.
- Coordinate material deliveries, plant requirements and logistics activities to maintain efficient site operations.
- Support testing and commissioning activities associated with substations, cable routes and associated infrastructure.
- Build and maintain collaborative relationships with SSEN, designers, subcontractors and local stakeholders.
- Mentor graduate and assistant engineers, promoting best practice and engineering excellence.

Who we're looking for
- Degree, HNC, HND or equivalent qualification in Civil Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- Valid CSCS card (Academically or Professionally Qualified Person).
- Full UK driving licence
- Previous experience working as a Site Engineer on major infrastructure, transmission, power, energy, highways or civil engineering projects.
- Experience of setting out earthworks, roads, drainage, reinforced concrete and utility installations.
- Knowledge of quality assurance processes, Inspection Test Plans (ITPs) and completion documentation.
- Experience managing subcontractors and coordinating multiple work fronts.
- Familiarity with NEC contracts and collaborative delivery environments.
- Experience working within strict health, safety and environmental requirements.
- Previous involvement in substation, HVDC, overhead line or utility infrastructure projects would be advantageous given the project scope.
