Site Engineer : Tunnelling and Heavy Civils

Location: Dartford, Kent

Start Date: 26th October

Duration: Contract through to April 2027 (High potential for ongoing extension into 2028)

Rate: GBP350 - GBP400 per day (Depending on experience)

About The Role And Project

Are you an experienced Site Engineer with a background in complex heavy civil engineering and underground infrastructure?

We are currently partnering with a specialist subcontractor to deliver a major transport infrastructure scheme in the Dartford area. This high-profile civil engineering project involves constructing a new dedicated single-bore subterranean passage cut through challenging chalk spine geology, delivering vital sustainable transport and pedestrian access alongside surrounding site civils, ground support, and earthworks.

This role offers long-term stability with guaranteed contract work through to April 2027, with strong potential for extension into 2028 across wider local regional masterplans.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Setting Out and Surveying: Deliver precise dimensional control and setting out using total stations, GPS, and robotic instruments for heavy civil structures, portal excavations, and tunneling works.
  • Technical Quality Control: Manage Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs), quality control documentation, as-built surveys, structural lining checks, and technical queries (RFIs) on site.
  • Subcontractor Management: Provide technical guidance to site operatives, section foremen, and specialist plant crews to ensure works progress to design specification.
  • Safety and Compliance: Produce and review Method Statements and Risk Assessments (RAMS), ensuring strict adherence to health, safety, and environmental standards within underground environments.
  • Site Supervision: Oversee excavation through chalk strata, ground stabilization, reinforced concrete elements, structural linings, and associated civil engineering packages.
  • Progress Reporting: Work closely with the Sub Agent, Project Manager, and client representatives to track progress against project baselines and report any site variances.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
