Position: Freelance Site Manager
Project Location: Port Talbot
Contract Duration: 5 Months (Start: November 2026 – End: March 2027)
Project Overview
The Margam Connection Project is a critical National Grid upgrade delivering the essential high-voltage infrastructure required to support the decarbonisation and transition to green steel production at the Port Talbot Tata Steel plant.
This specific 5-month freelance role spans the peak winter installation window. It focuses heavily on managing the building envelopes, structural cladding, weatherproofing, and specialist roofing for the massive new 275kV Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) substation halls being erected at the Margam and Tata Steel boundaries.
Core Responsibilities
- Subcontractor Management: Supervise and coordinate specialist trades (specifically roofing, high-performance cladding, structural steel, and rainwater systems) ensuring works align strictly with project schedules.
- Winter Progression & H&S: Actively manage site progress during challenging winter conditions. Enforce uncompromising health and safety compliance, method statements (RAMS), and daily site permit-to-work systems.
- Quality Assurance: Oversee strict compliance with technical specifications for high-voltage GIS asset enclosures, managing inspection test plans (ITPs), sign-offs, and progressive handover files.
- Site Logistics: Coordinate logistics and material drops in accordance with the project's strict Construction Logistics Plan (CLP). Utilise the DataScope DMS booking system for deliveries via the designated Cefn Gwrgan Road control points and Tata Steel access boundaries.
- Environmental & Compliance: Maintain strict adherence to local council parameters, Considerate Constructors Scheme guidelines, and strict site-waste segregation rules.
- Reporting: Maintain detailed daily site diaries, progress reports, allocation sheets, and digital quality checks using the project's integrated digital management tools.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
