Site Reliability Engineer | Linux, Networking & Bare Metal
Up to £110K + Shares + Benefits | Remote First, UK/Europe
Plan A Digital are recruiting for a FinTech company building mission-critical connectivity infrastructure for global financial markets.
About the Role
We are looking for an experienced Site Reliability Engineer with a strong Linux, network engineering and physical infrastructure background.
This is not a cloud-only, DevOps or Kubernetes-focused SRE role. You will need genuine hands-on experience across Linux, physical network hardware, bare-metal servers and infrastructure automation. AWS/GCP forms part of the environment, but the core of this position is much deeper infrastructure engineering.
What You Will Be Working On
- Automating physical server, network and cloud infrastructure using Ansible and code
- Provisioning and troubleshooting bare-metal Linux servers
- Configuring and troubleshooting physical network infrastructure
- Working with switches, VLANs, routing, TCP/IP and network connectivity
- Linux administration, including kernel configuration and tuning
- Building tooling and automation using Python, Go, Java, Bash or similar
- Supporting highly available, mission-critical production infrastructure
- Working across datacentres, AWS/GCP and hybrid infrastructure
- Working directly with hardware vendors, telecom providers and other technology partners
- Improving CI/CD and infrastructure provisioning processes

Essential Technical Experience
Please only apply if you have strong hands-on experience in the following areas:
- Linux systems administration
- Linux kernel configuration, tuning and troubleshooting
- Physical network hardware configuration
- Switch configuration and VLANs
- Routing, routing protocols, TCP/IP and subnetting
- Hands-on network troubleshooting
- Bare-metal server provisioning and physical infrastructure
- Ansible, including writing and maintaining playbooks
- Python, Go, Java or another programming language
- Bash/shell scripting and automation
- AWS and/or GCP
- Working with third-party hardware, network or technology vendors
Experience with Cisco, Juniper, Arista, F5 or similar network technologies would be particularly relevant.
Also Valuable
Experience with any of the following would strengthen your application:
- SAML, OAuth2, Kerberos, LDAP or SSO
- Active Directory / Entra ID
- PostgreSQL clustering, replication or other HA database technologies
- Datacentre infrastructure
- Telecoms or ISP environments
- Financial services or electronic trading
- Low-latency infrastructure
- Hybrid on-premise/cloud environments
Who This Role Is Best Suited To
We are particularly interested in engineers who started their careers in Linux Systems Engineering, Network Engineering or Infrastructure Engineering and have subsequently developed strong automation and SRE capabilities.

You should be comfortable moving between:
- Network hardware → Bare-metal servers → Linux/kernel → Ansible/automation → Cloud
Please note
Strong cloud, Kubernetes or platform engineering experience alone will not be sufficient for this position.
If your experience is predominantly AWS/GCP, Kubernetes, Terraform or application-level SRE without substantial hands-on experience configuring physical networks, switches, VLANs, routing and Linux systems, this role is unlikely to be the right match.
Conversely, if you are an infrastructure or network engineer who has moved heavily into Linux, automation and coding, we would particularly like to hear from you.
