Lead Site Reliability & Observability Engineer
West Midlands (hybrid) | 6-month contract
The Opportunity
A global technology business is looking for a Lead SRE / Observability Engineer to build its monitoring and reliability platform from the ground up. There is no existing Datadog setup and little SRE practice today, so this is a true greenfield project. You’ll define the strategy, implement it hands-on and leave the engineering teams with a platform they can rely on.
The goal is simple: catch issues within minutes of a release, before customers notice.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Designing and implementing Datadog across an Azure and Cloudflare estate
- Building synthetic monitoring for critical APIs, integrations and customer journeys
- Embedding automated release validation into Azure DevOps and GitHub pipelines
- Delivering monitoring-as-code and testing-as-code with Terraform
- Creating actionable dashboards, SLOs, SLIs, alerting and anomaly detection
- Leading root-cause analysis and improving reliability and performance across production
- Advising engineering teams and building SRE practices that last beyond the engagement

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
