Site Waste Manager / Supervisor
Location: Filton, Bristol
Hours: Monday to Friday, 07:00 – 15:30
Contract Type: Permanent
Reports To: UK Waste Programme Manager
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced and proactive Site Waste Manager / Supervisor to lead our comprehensive waste management programme at our Filton, Bristol site. This is a strategic operational role combining hands-on leadership, regulatory compliance, financial oversight, and team management responsibilities.
As the Site Waste Manager, you will be responsible for all aspects of the waste programme, ensuring operational excellence, environmental compliance, accurate financial reporting, and the development of a high-performing team of six waste operatives. Reporting to the UK Waste Programme Manager, you will serve as the subject matter expert for waste management across the site, driving continuous improvement and maintaining exemplary standards.
What your day to day will look like
Programme Management and Leadership
You will have overall responsibility for planning, coordinating, and managing all waste management activities across the Filton site. This includes developing operational strategies, establishing procedures, setting performance targets, and ensuring the smooth day-to-day running of all waste collection, segregation, storage, and disposal operations. You will be accountable for programme effectiveness and continuous improvement initiatives.
Team Management and Development
You will directly manage a team of six waste operatives, providing clear direction, daily task allocation, performance management, and ongoing support. Building a cohesive, safety-focused team culture is essential. You will conduct regular team meetings, address performance issues constructively, and foster professional development to maximize team capability and engagement.
Training and Compliance
You will ensure all team members maintain current, compliant training records for their roles, including hazardous waste handling, equipment operation, health and safety requirements, and site-specific procedures. You will identify training needs, coordinate training delivery, maintain training matrices, and ensure competency standards are met and documented across the team.
Financial Management and Reporting
You will be responsible for ensuring accurate waste data submissions to accounts, verifying contractor invoices against actual collections, tracking waste volumes and costs, and identifying opportunities for cost optimization. Financial accuracy and timely reporting are critical aspects of this role, requiring meticulous attention to detail and strong analytical capabilities.
Regulatory Compliance and Documentation
Collate, verify and maintain all waste transfer notes and consignment notes, ensuring complete compliance with environmental legislation and duty of care requirements. You will oversee the proper classification and documentation of all waste streams, maintain comprehensive audit trails and ensure the site meets all regulatory obligations for waste management.
Monthly Reporting and Presentations
You will produce detailed monthly waste reports and presentations for site leadership, the UK Waste Programme Manager, and stakeholders, analysing waste performance metrics, tonnage data, cost trends, recycling rates, compliance status, and operational achievements. Your reports will inform strategic decisions and demonstrate programme value and environmental performance.

Contractor Management and Coordination
You will manage relationships with waste contractors, scheduling collections, monitoring service delivery, addressing performance issues, and ensuring contractual obligations are met. You will act as the primary liaison for all waste-related contractor activities, ensuring safe, compliant, and efficient operations.
Health, Safety, and Environmental Standards
Champion a culture of safety across all waste operations, conducting risk assessments, investigating incidents, implementing corrective actions, and ensuring full compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations. You will lead by example, maintaining the highest standards of workplace safety and environmental stewardship.
Operational Problem Solving
You will address operational challenges proactively, resolving logistical issues, managing emergency situations, implementing contingency plans, and ensuring minimal disruption to waste services. Your leadership will be essential in maintaining operational resilience and service continuity.
Stakeholder Communication
You will communicate effectively with the UK Waste Programme Manager, site management, building occupants, contractors, regulatory bodies, and other stakeholders, providing expert guidance on waste management matters and building strong collaborative relationships across the organisation.
Essential Requirements
Management and Leadership Experience
Proven experience managing waste management operations in an industrial, commercial, or facilities management environment. Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate, and develop teams effectively. Experience managing supervisory or coordinator-level staff and delivering results through others is essential.
Waste Management Expertise
Comprehensive knowledge of hazardous and non-hazardous waste regulations, classification systems (EWC codes), waste hierarchy principles and environmental compliance requirements. Experience with waste transfer notes, consignment notes, and duty of care documentation is essential. Understanding of recycling processes and waste diversion strategies is highly desirable.
Financial and Analytical Skills
Strong financial acumen with experience managing budgets, tracking costs, verifying invoices, and producing financial reports. Ability to analyse data, identify trends and translate information into actionable insights. Proficiency with Excel and data management systems.
Health and Safety Competence
Solid understanding of health and safety requirements for waste operations, including risk assessment, incident investigation, and regulatory compliance. Relevant qualifications such as IOSH Managing Safely or equivalent are highly desirable. Experience implementing safety improvements and managing safety performance is essential.
Communication and Presentation Skills
Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to produce clear, professional reports and deliver effective presentations to diverse audiences including senior management. Strong interpersonal skills for building relationships and managing stakeholders at all levels.

Organisational and Planning Abilities
Exceptional organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously, plan complex operations, and maintain attention to detail under pressure. Strategic thinking combined with practical operational execution capabilities.
Technical Proficiency
Competent with Microsoft Office suite, particularly Excel, Word, and PowerPoint for reporting and presentation purposes. Experience with waste management software systems or databases is advantageous. Ability to learn new systems quickly.
Qualifications
Relevant waste management, environmental, or facilities management qualifications will be advantageous. Health and safety certifications are beneficial.
Personal Attributes
You must be a confident, decisive leader with strong problem-solving abilities and resilience. A proactive, hands-on approach combined with strategic thinking is essential. High integrity, accountability, and commitment to excellence are fundamental to success in this role.
Availability
You must be available to work the shift pattern of 07:00 to 15:30, Monday to Friday, with flexibility to adapt to operational requirements and occasional extended hours when business needs demand.
