Description:

Full Time / 37 Hours Per Week / Permanent

Would you like to play a key role in ensuring graves are suitably prepped and ready for burials? Join us as a Skilled Cemetery Operative to work in a small team to undertake grave digging, horticultural work, and other duties in accordance with Codes of Practice and current legislation. We provide services in a sensitive manner, meeting all the requirements for different faiths and cultures, and ensure all safe working practices are maintained and adhered to.

You'll be based at Gilroes Cemetery and you'll be expected to work outdoors in all-weather types. This is a full-time, permanent post working 37 hours per week from Monday to Friday. However, you'll be able to work on a rota system to cover our burials and to undertake any other similar or equivalent duties commensurate with the post.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Prepare graves for burial, backfilling and subsequent aftercare either mechanically or manually using shoring, shuttering and plant equipment.
  • Locate graves using cemetery plans and maps.
  • Prepare and dress graves for funerals.
  • Level and turf graves and the surrounding areas.
  • Operate and cleanse powered and manual hand tools, specialized plant, and other equipment.
  • Liaise with Funeral Directors and members of the clergy to discuss issues in preparation for future burials.
  • On occasions, carry out exhumations, assist in the development of soft and hard landscaping as well as other activities in the aspect of horticulture work.

What You’ll Need

  • Experience of outdoor work using construction or agricultural machinery with knowledge of basic maintenance.
  • Knowledge of motor vehicles or other mechanical equipment.
  • Empathy and compassion to deal sensitively with members of the public and others in times of personal stress and grief.
  • Basic administrative skills to ensure records of interments are accurate and up to date as well as complete all paperwork relevant to the cemetery and grounds maintenance service.
  • A valid driving license.
