Job Details

Our large walled garden has fruit trees, mixed flower borders, trained roses and climbers, exceptional ornamental trees and a blend of cut lawns and meadow areas. There is a small display glasshouse where more tender plants are grown and we have an area for propagation of hardy annuals and other display elements for the borders. This is a very biodiverse garden particularly because of the large meadow areas and so we do everything we can to preserve and enhance this including using bio-controls, leaving different areas cut to different lengths and reducing the vigour of the grass in the meadows to promote the wildflowers.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Successful candidates should have a level 2 qualification in horticulture (or working towards it) or be able to demonstrate experience within a similar type of varied, craft gardening role. You should be able to work under your own initiative and be a flexible member of the team. We are a small team so the role is physically demanding of all team members. Tasks include the use of machinery, lifting heavy objects and being outside all day in all weathers. This role would suit a discreet individual, potentially with experience of working in a private garden previously. The role reports directly to the Head Gardener.
