About the Role
We’re looking for skilled volunteers to bring their expertise, ideas and energy to Espresso Press, a new literary non-profit for Black women writers where we publish and platform our stories, craft and authorship, so we can exist in our own way, on our own terms.
What Difference Will You Make?
Espresso Press is being built from the ground up, and skilled volunteers will help us turn a clear creative vision into something people can find, experience and become part of.
At this early stage, one of our biggest challenges is capacity. There is so much we want to build, but as a new non-profit we won’t immediately have the resources to employ specialists across every area we need.
- Support with digital, web and tech could help us create a thoughtful and accessible online home for Espresso Press and put the right infrastructure in place as our community grows.
- PR, marketing and communications expertise could help us reach Black women writers, build relationships across the literary and cultural landscape, and make sure the opportunities, publishing and gatherings we create actually reach the people they are intended for.
- Creative and brand support could help us translate the world we are building into campaigns, content and experiences that feel distinctive and recognisably Espresso Press.
Just as importantly, skilled volunteers can bring perspectives and possibilities beyond our existing team. We’re intentionally leaving the invitation open to people who see something we haven’t yet considered a useful connection, an area of expertise, a different way of approaching a challenge or an opportunity we simply don’t know exists yet.
Ultimately, this support gives our small founding team greater capacity to focus on the work Espresso Press exists to do: publishing and platforming Black women’s stories, craft and authorship, and creating the conditions for Black women writers to exist creatively in their own way, on their own terms.

What Are We Looking For?
We’re looking for people who believe in what Espresso Press is here to do and are excited by the opportunity to lend their skills to a new literary organisation as it grows.
You’ll have a genuine interest in literature, culture, creativity or community, and a belief in creating more space and possibility for Black women writers. You don’t need to work in publishing or be a writer yourself.
Right now, we’d particularly love to hear from people with professional experience in one or more of:
- Digital, web or tech — from web development and UX to digital platforms, systems, accessibility or online communities.
- PR and press — particularly people who understand the literary, publishing, arts, culture or lifestyle media landscape.
- Marketing and communications — including campaigns, content, audience development, email and digital marketing.
- Brand and creative — including graphic design, art direction, photography, film or other skills that could help us bring the Espresso Press world to life.
But we’re intentionally leaving some space around the edges.
You might have expertise we haven’t listed, an idea for how your particular field could support what we’re building, or connections and experience that could open up possibilities we haven’t considered yet. If Espresso Press resonates with you and you can see a meaningful way you could contribute, we’d love to hear about it.
We don’t expect any one volunteer to cover all of these areas. We’re much more interested in people who are genuinely good at what they do and can bring that expertise generously, thoughtfully and collaboratively.
As an organisation created for Black women writers, we particularly welcome people who bring lived experience or meaningful understanding of the communities we exist to support.

What Will You Be Doing?
Espresso Press is at the very beginning of its journey, and we’re looking for skilled volunteers who are excited by what we’re building and would like to lend their expertise to help us bring it to life.
Right now, we’re particularly interested in hearing from people with experience across:
- Digital, web and tech — helping us create a brilliant digital home for Espresso Press and think about the systems and infrastructure we’ll need as we grow.
- PR and press — helping us build relationships and visibility across the literary, cultural and wider media landscape.
- Marketing and communications — helping us tell our story, reach our community and build awareness of our publishing, events and opportunities.
- Brand and creative — helping us bring our emerging creative world to life across different platforms, campaigns and projects.
But this is deliberately not an exhaustive list.
Espresso Press is new, and we know some of the most valuable people we meet may bring expertise, ideas or connections we haven’t thought to ask for yet. If what we’re building resonates with you and you can see a way your skills could contribute, we’d genuinely love to hear from you.
We’re also not expecting one person to do everything or looking to build a traditional volunteer team with fixed weekly commitments. Depending on your expertise and availability, your involvement might be a defined piece of work, occasional specialist advice, support around a particular moment or project, or something more ongoing that we shape together.
This is an opportunity to come in early, share what you know and help us turn an ambitious idea into a lasting organisation.
